Can the digitone be used for subtractive synthesis without delving into FM. for example, just selecting a waveform and filtering etc?
Yes. You can set the algorithm to basically additive synthesis, change the harmonics setting so the wave is almost a sawtooth or square, and then use the filter to shape the sound. However I think it’s better to use both the filter and FM together for more in-depth sound shaping!
Using only carrier oscillators (additive) with saw & square like waveform you can make
only a very basic VA synthesis. However FM is more fun!
@Naboo don’t be afraid, you just have to go easy on the modulators depths to stay in the realm of VA oscillators. Or use the filter to tame the highest frequencies when going deep FM.
Digitone is the right synth to accustom your ear to the FM sound, IMO.
Then a whole new universe of sounds opens.
Edit: I might be assuming a bit too much, sorry
Thanks
If it can be used as a basic VA, that would be a massive bonus.
