Ned Rush is brilliant for tips and tricks. But I’m not sure it’s for beginners.
I can teach you in one hour anything you need to know to get started making music using ableton live
yep but honestly I learned about Live way more from power users then the absolute beginners stuff, so just thought worth throwing it out there…
and he’s the least annoying youtuber I could think of
Thanks guys! Yeah, I’ll go and dig on the ableton channel, see what I find. And yeah, good ol’ Ned Rush is cool, but indeed not so beginner friendly.
Thematic search with a specific goal in mind might be the way… after I get the strict basics.
@Phillip that’s a generous proposition, man. Thanks! I think I’m more in line with contents in video or readable form, that I can go back to / pause again and again.
You have to pay for this course, but it’s really good. There is 70% discount at this moment.
Ableton Live 12 Course: The Step-by-Step Guide (pushpatterns.com)
Underbelly on YouTube is also great. The videos are old now but still totally relevant.
Ableton has quite a lot of material covering the basics of Live:
Learn Live
Barra is how I got my start when I learned Ableton back when 9 came out and I first got it. Looks like it has been updated, but I found it useful back then.
Forgot about Underbelly. +1
Seed To Stage is the Man!
I learned crazy useful tips on Berklee channel. Not just Ableton (i am not a good Ableton user) but also about music theory.
Had my first crash with m2 mini and 12.1, did not do anythimg special, maybe 4 or 5 vital instances, and some renderd tracks…
Anyone out there with problems too?
Thanks guys for all your advices about learning Live! Let’s gooooo!
Is it worthwhile if you’re mainly looking for sound design/ mixing and stuff?
I bought a udemy course a while back, but 50% of it is reserved for midi/audio routing and recording and that sorta stuff
I don’t think so, the course is more a (shortened)manual but in a video format. But it’s very useful for Ableton Live beginners, it will teach you the fundamentals.
Thanks for the tip! I just bought the Ableton Live 12 Course for $59 (instead of $199). I don’t love this guy’s voice (too emphatic) but I’ve watched some of his YT videos and he seems to know what he’s doing. For $59 bucks for 22 hours of videos seems fair.
One of the things I do not like about using YouTube for this kind of thing is that it is haphazard and you just kind of jump around. Live is so huge, getting into the details in any kind of sensible way is tough.
I like Seed to Stage, but his courses are very expensive. He also sometimes moves too fast.
I got it too; seems like a good deal and he offers a return period.
I’ve been helping my brother switch to Live and that was his experience when he tried on his own. Fragmented learning.
There’s some great stuff, but the hard part when starting is knowing when it’s bad.
The confidence in some of the videos does not match the information they’re presenting and some of it is either wrong or just adds unnecessary steps to do something easy.
I keep considering putting a course together. Parents and brother are all educators so I’m familiar with lesson plans and never hurts to have more options for learning.
