Analog Rytm OS 1.70 Upgrade

Yes, seems so - right now. Guess the concept is to distribute new features evenly over the product line - in the sense one product gets the feature - then see how people like it, then it might be implemented in others.

Right now I kind of love the fact that the machines are same same but different. And somehow I also like the idea to bring in a digitakt just for the purpose of giving the AR more LFOs and midi automation. 🥹

doing mine now and will run some chores/eat while waiting for the 2.5 hours to complete

Yeah, same. I thought about getting the TR8s for years, mostly because of more jam friendly features.
It’s even more flexible than on the TR8s, because you can choose which tracks are included. When you engage page looping you can mute tracks with the pads and those won’t be affected.
Only four pages per pattern and not 8 seperate variations like on the TR8s, though. But that’s plenty for me.
I really like that Elektron brought their own twist to it.

It’s actually page playback in Elektron lingo, but I called it page looping since it came out, too. Somehow feels more natural.

Elekktrikk Home Video Entertainment: Analog Rytm 1.70 Test Drive
2023-11-26 ca. 15 minutes

:warning: deep basses! :warning: Headphones recommended (really miss the bandpass filter of the ST - for real tracks record multitrack over direct outs and console or overbridge and EQ properly).

This is a test drive. Recorded via Overbridge (new version) directly.

Genre: kind of dub techno but delay is still tame and no stabbed chords.

Develops very slowly over time. Like from 8:34 base drum modulation.

Makes use of the new machines and euclidean sequencer. Play 10 times and your waiting time for calibration of the AR after the update is over :wink:

HiFi:

LoFi: (mp3 96kbps because of upload limits)

this update will make the Rytm an even better partner for my Virus!

Would some kind soul please explain page playback/looping for this dimwit, please.

@Needles_13 Each of the four pages on the Rytm (page 1 is steps 1-16, page 2 is steps 17-32, page 3 is steps 33-48 and page 4 is 49-64 - so just we’re on the same page) can now be looped and you can chain the pages.
It’s like mini patterns inside each pattern.

So instead of your sequence always going from step 1 to step 64 or whatever your pattern length is, you can now choose to loop only page 1 (steps 1-16), pages 1+2 (steps 1-32) and so on.
So you can build variations inside your pattern and then combine them on the fly.

You can also choose which tracks are included.
So you could go from a 16 step sequence for your hi hats to a 32 sequence, then to a 64 step sequence, then also include your snare while the rest of the Rytm still plays only 16 steps.

You just hold the page button, the screen changes and now trigs 1-4 are your four pages and you can now press them to activate or deactivate which pages are played. The pads let you exclude tracks from it by muting them in page playback mode.

Edit, one of the main benefits is that we can now build and edit our sequence while everything’s still playing. On Elektron’s (and most sequencer’s afaik), you can’t pull up a pattern for editing only. You can only change to a pattern and have it play. So, changing to an empty pattern always means silence. Now we can edit a page and then later drop it while everything continues to play.

The new SY RAW, SY CHIP and HH LAB machines are really fantastic! Thank you Elektron. I can also understand that there is no more room for a second LFO. What I don’t understand is why manually played Aftertouch values and RETRIGs are still not recorded by the sequencer. Can someone explain this to me?

Excellent - thanks a million @Schnork :v:

You can find raw data dumps from the 909. using that as a sample combined with filter and the VCA will get you quite close (the envelope timing is not the same, but still…)

Wow, amazing update. The Euclidean and Page Loop implementations are really incredible.

I love that the Euclidean parameters are controllably by MIDI CC. Can anyone confirm whether they can also be modulated by an internal Rytm LFO, or by the CV/expression inputs? I’m away from my studio until January.

I’m also wondering how Page Loop interacts with the modulo-type (x:y) trig conditions. For example, if you have a trig conditioned to play on 2:4 loops, and the track is normally 4 pages long, if you decide to loop only its pages 1 and 3, will the 2:4 modulo condition be recalculated on the basis of 2 pages rather than 4 pages now?

It work’s on the basis of executed trigs, so I’ll take page looping into account, but you can exclude any track from being effected by it, if you want to retain your loops.

mk1 user here. how are people getting on with ears vs no decimal visual?
testing tonight with an LFO to sample start time, and glad it’s implemented here.
but damn the slow “twiddle” is probably the maddest new thing my brains dealing with, coming from md where the thumb finger twists can be savage i’m really having to restrain those automatic synapse movements. it’s a new elektron thing!?

completed update and exploring new euclidian features and sounds!

My calibration only took about one hour. The screen said everything was complete and to restart the unit - is everything ok? Did anyone else have a calibration shorter than the stated 2.5 hours?

Yes, mine completed in about an hour and a half.

2 hours some minutes. But I wasn’t there when it finished. Just surprised that it already had.

SY CHIP is a beast. Only had a few hours to work with all the new stuff, but gotta hand it to Elektron on delivering an awesome update. All the new machines and updates to the old ones really increase the pallet of sounds. Def beating new life into my MK I. Also feel like the pad response is somehow improved…not sure of it’s an illusion or not but I’ll take it

yep mine completed in about 1.5hrs

how do you find the new machines and modes on the rytm? also how to use the new euclidean modes?
