wrong thread buddy
a couple more:
Ranking Of Kings, one of the best character developments in any fiction ive seen and that goes for the whole cast. People you start with really disliking and stereotype, end up being the best fricking characters in the whole show.
Sonny Boy,
if you are into psychedelic and philosophical works of art, then this is worth a watch
And the one anime i cant believe has not been mention yet.
Interstella 5555
The Anime reimagination of Daft Punks “Discovery”
It’s all been rather dead to me for some time. Champloo might have been the last series I actually liked. Berserk 1997 was interesting but somewhat boring in the way all prequels usually are (and, of course, it’s from 1997).
I liked Paranoia Agent way back during it’s original (US) run.
But, generally, I’m pretty sick to death of stories about high school students, and that’s the bulk of what gets dubbed and presented to a Western audience. It’s all mostly YA sorts of themes and quite, well, boring. Despite how over the top the emoting is and how flashy the shows look, there is not much substance.
What I originally liked about Anime decades ago was that it tended to deal with more serious themes than other media, but in a post-Sopranos world we are awash with serious themes in other media, and the serious themed Anime is not what is popular.
Whaaa, you found even the eclipse boring?
It was interestingly over the top (and that felt earned given how mostly mundane things were up until that point), but if you already know generally what happens that sucks out the tension. If I hadn’t, that may have been different. All prequels have that problem, though.
Aah ok,
I just started watching it without knowing anything and I felt completely gutted after the eclipse.
Knowing nothing of the later works is the best way to consume prequels. I expect.
Regardless, it is (almost) a quarter of a century old at this point.
Started watching Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction (DDDD). It’s an unusual scifi anime - somewhat retro character designs, mysterious aliens who don’t seem to do much but their giant spacecraft freaks out the military, etc.
Sounds like our current news.
Which platform is it available on?
Crunchyroll.
and yeah, the show makes government and military officials look incompetent in the face of an unexpected event, unlike Godzilla movies where the response to the invading monster(s) is well coordinated even if their weapons are useless against the monster.
I really enjoyed that one!
In many ways similar to district 9.
Quite a bit late to the thread, but it was much the same for me in 2024.
Had a coworker who is anime obsessed who wouldn’t shut up about JJK. Finally he wore me down and I was floored by it. Excellent writing, wonderful pacing, just a powerhouse show. I’d recommend it to someone new to anime in a heartbeat.
Hah, my first anime was Serial Experiments Lain when it aired on TechTV. I was 12 years old that show definitely wasn’t the one to start with IMHO… But an incredible series to this day. Hard to believe they made a modern-technology-obsessed anime in the mid 90s that could manage to stay relevant for 25 years but they sure did.
I enjoyed it a lot, as a loose period piece serialized drama it does well.
Recently watched the entire series. I have to admit, I can see why it’s so highly praised, but it also wasn’t for me. It felt slow paced, with so many hardly-developed characters to keep track of. It could just be that I wasn’t watching weekly, I know that can influence the way something comes across.
Probably next up for me
The tonal shift mid season 2 was insane. When Shibuya incident started it just went to the moon after that. Peak anime imo
This. Every time I find myself thinking “well, I liked Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell so maybe there’s more recent anime that’s worth watching” and I try out some recommendation or other (such as the ones in this thread) it always turns out it’s for and about children (“YA” == teenager == child).
Is there really no anime for adults anymore?
And I think this is already being quite generous to cowboy bebop, if we’re being real lol
Well, at least three of its main characters are legally adults
Yes it does clear that bar! Lol
Anime for adults - not intended to be a comprehensive list:
Space Brothers
Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.
Undead Murder Farce
Planetes
Pluto
Run With The Wind
If you happen to have a screen turned on its side, it’s great for reading the stories. You decide the pacing and you’re not at mercy of the same 5-10 voice actors every time. Korean comics seem to be of higher quality than Japanese when speaking about production value as it’s in color, and they have different styles and tropes with I think makes for a better experience in general. They have a weird page layout but that is what it is… The Korean comics are called manhwa instead of manga.
So for some reason I stoped watching Pluto after episode 6 and decided to watch the last two episodes. And to be honest I don’t know why I stoped watching it because all I can say about Pluto is
It’s such a beautifully animated show with contemplation on what it is to be human.
It’s slow paced and weaves a huge amount of threads which connect beautifully at the end.
Peak sci fi and peak anime!
