Apps most similar to HW grooveboxes?

What exactly is the Elektron workflow. Some features or buttons? Which app has similar flow?

Yes Drumcomputer is Windows Standalone and vst…it feels and sounds very good. But the touchscreen thing makes it great on iPad, then you can export the sessions later to your computer for further tweaking…

I wish I knew of one.

Important sequencing features to me (I may miss out some that are not important to me)

  • true step sequencing (not just step recording, bye-bye ableton note)
  • different lengths per track
  • conditionals (e.g. only play this step the 2nd time of each 4 time)
  • parameter locks (e.g. turn the reverb up to 50% only on on this step)
  • muting at the sequencer level, not the audio level
  • chaining together a sequence of patterns (song mode, even better)
  • copy and paste (pattern, sequence, note, sound)

There are of course specific button combos that go with those on an elektron box, but when I said workflow above I was thinking more of the features in general).

Koala only does about half of those. EG nodes may have all of them but it certainly doesn’t have all of them in the same node.

Then that is pretty much Drambo.

This post is a test for all of us not suggesting Drambo and getting yelled at :grinning:

haha :joy: I really want to experience the hardware workflow seriously for once on iPad. It is absolutely okay to mention Drambo as this is part of the context.

Made this weekend: https://ashy-rock-0e6df6103.5.azurestaticapps.net/

Non-responsive, only on pc, bit buggy and very limited

But, it’s an Elektron-inspired sequencer synth :raised_hands:

Korg Gadget gives me my groovebox fix.

Just out of curiosity, why are you searching for a hardware workflow in software which is used with a touchscreen? Are you in search for some kind of workflow trained by muscle memory? Most apps change the gui dynamically based on the context, that is what makes is awesome. No hardware constrains
I hope, I formulated my questions ok (I used google translate).

Anyone claiming you cannot train muscle memory using an app on a touchscreen has never seen a 12 year old using their phone.

Ampify Groovebox, Caustic, Gadget, Elastic Drums, Electribe Wave
DM2 , Waldorf Attack?

I used to spend all my time in these apps and many more, until Drambo came out. Now they’re all collecting digital dust and mostly obsolete to me.

I very rarely customize or dig deep in the weeds with it. Just load plugins, sound design. jam, p-lock, iterate, sample loops into Koala AU if DSP is maxing out, and keep layering.
It’s just immediate, efficient and endlessly inspiring—like a perfect amalgamation of every great HW groovebox rolled into one.
I’d sell my kidney if I could get a hardware version of Drambo, with the same plugin modularity.

I know for a fact that muscle memory for ME, with koala, is next to impossible. The fact the grid can be resized and scrolled means nothing is ever in the same place.

I wouldn’t make that claim for anyone else, nor would I generalise it to other apps.

EDIT: I do like koala, (grid display of sequence is great) but it can’t match the muscle memory you can develop on an Elektron sequencer FOR ME.

Because I don’t own any hardware apart from my acoustic instruments and midi controllers.

I really want to know if I have bias over hardwares with inferior chips running some sequencing and sampling programs(they called it dawless)

Most likely I will pick a more traditional feel software groovebox and pair my launchpad with it to get a feel what it is like using hardwares.

So you aren’t a 12 year old?

Most people have pretty decent muscle memory typing on smartphone, no?

As a trained guitarist. I can confirm muscle memory in terms of playing instrument is actually how well your brain delivers signal to your fingers. A physically more responsive instrument doesn’t necessarily give better muscle memory.

We are all different, at least generically.

We all know it. It is a well established fact

Thank you, now I understand you a little better.
I would like to mention a really old app Arturia Spark, it is not a plug-in, you will need to export the loops.
There is also a desktop version.
The desktop version was also sold with a special controller the Spark Le.
The cool thing is, you can use the controller with the app and desktop, also kits can be imported and exported on both platforms. The desktop version even has the synth engine opened up, so you can make your own synth patches.
The controller version can be found really cheap second hand.
This is what I settled down with, after my search for a fun groovebox type of app.

not sure if it works currently, … yep still does

Already posted elsewhere, but relevant here too. Koala has amazing keyboard support, so I bought a cheap mechanical keyboard and swapped out some keycaps to match. It’s so good. I use it with Ableton, as I find Koala to be superior in some ways, and way more immediate.
