Bad Gear

Coincidentally I watched this which was uploaded earlier today before the Bad Gear ep, thought it was rather nice -

What happens if you dump a sampled granular synthesis into the Wavestate? Even more textures!

I’m sorry that I have annoyed you

Annoyed? not really.

now back to talking about Bad Gear/Pilz…

I can’t even wrap my head around using this thing. So, you choose the sounds for each layer; set a pattern for the sounds; set a rhythm for the pattern; set envelopes for each step of the rhythm. And that’s per patch? And then you use the patch to compose the song? Or is the patch itself the song, like one of 12 minute long generative modular patch noodle videos? I cannot imagine the menu diving involved in setting these things up and working that way to make music

Me when I realise that music is a sequence of sounds arranged in a certain order :exploding_head:

My response to a similar question on the Wavestate thread, followed by responses from other users.

fwiw, I don’t believe there is one correct way to use it, subject to approval by others. If you find a place for it in your music, then the way you are using it is the correct way for you.

I was think its a cool synth, the first time i got really intrested in a bad gear device, it looks like a lot of work to set it up, and that could be a real flaw or a real game changer.

Yeah, I can see it as a great riff generator. When it was first announced, I saw it as a possible “poor man’s Nord Wave.” Samples plus synthesis, cool filter models, that nifty little joy stick…what’s not to love? But once I did more research, it seemed that really, really wasn’t the intended use case. So I decided to take a pass. But I’m glad if it’s working for you

I bought it because my friend convinced me I could use it for playing samples of my no-preset analog synths.

I still haven’t gotten around to that original use case.

I get that peeps find the idea of programming their own wave sequences on this thing to be daunting. But this is based on the assumption that if you buy a Wavestate, you must program your own wave sequences. I decided that I don’t have to do that. The preset packs that I bought come with preprogrammed wave sequences - plenty fine for me, because all i have to do to get some “personalized” wave sequence behavior is to twist those 8 white knobs.

As mentioned on the actual Wavestate thread, you can use the wave sequences as riffs to build a song on… or you can build a song on other gear, then add Wavestate wave sequenced stuff to the mix… or just use it as a regular rompler with up to 12 velocity layers and some other tricks… or whatever… no wrong way to go about it.

All this time I thought Florian was secretly working for Roland, but it’s Nintendo that he is affiliated with.

I think the auto-tune video is an all-timer. LOLed many times, I loved the comparison to distorted guitars and banjo. Proud to be a patron even if he didn’t vocode my ambient techno alter ego as promised
