Best of poorly reviewed Pitchfork albums

 Every chance I get!

Whoa! I saw a Tool music meme and thought of this thread

It missed the mark, but it’s not terrible. Just somebody who got really excited about Douglas Hofstadter, and then tried to make an album review out the style. It didn’t work completely, but I liked the hommage. 5.9/10

And at the other end of the spectrum…

(IMO it’s a great album, but I’m not sure anyone loves it as much as this reviewer)

Someone had been reading godel, Escher, bach before writing this one.

To be fair Drukqs wasn’t well received on its release. This isn’t just a Pitchfork thing.

We wanted more Windowlicker & Come To Daddy but got neither. It wasn’t concise like RDJ album or melodic like SAW or thumping like Classics. In 2001 SAWII was for weirdos. So of course Drukqs got middling scores.

Hindsight’s a good thing & should be encouraged. Drukqs matured well.

Pitchfork serves its purpose. Even if that’s just reinforcing that Frank Zappa quote… “Most rock journalism is people who can’t write, interviewing people who can’t talk, for people who can’t read.”

Those Tool, Autechre, NIN & Jet reviews are satire. Wouldn’t be surprised if Pitchfork’s old writers were more interested in taking the piss than listening to CDs other journos in boring spots like Rolling Stone had already covered.

Pitchfork is done.

It’s actually quite disheartening. However much their taste changed with Condé Nast, they were still doing important work. Their writing had never been better (Sunday Reviews were incredible). I just hope this allows space and drive for a newer generation of decent tastemakers under one banner.

I loved this record. Came out when I was on the road and this style of indie rock was getting big again. Brings back memories to see this one.

Reminds me when Rolling Stone had to re-review Nevermind because the original review of it summed up basically said “eh”. Then just a few years later R.S. is placing the album in their all time records list.

Got to remind ourselves that a lot of these reviewers probably don’t even like grilled cheese.

at first I read this as “Patchwerk is done”, which is also seems to be true

Sad to see Pitchfork go bust, but not shocked. It’s got to be hard to make money on music journalism now that everybody can stream every album, and any artist who wants to make a statement can pick up their phone and broadcast straight to their fans. The Cone Nast turn to poptism was probably a good thing for their bottom line, but it diluted their editorial voice too much for my taste.

Like, the site was objectively wrong when it panned Daft Punk, but I respect that definite stance more than the mewling “re-review” of Discovery they did a couple of years back to save face.

Maybe they will rebrand? Pitchspork has nice ring to it. Pitchspork Music Fest. Or maybe it just be the GQ Music Fest from now on.

A rebland? One lives in hope.

Doubtful it had much to do with how well it did and more to do with more corporate nefariousness

I do hope everyone, esp Puja, Philip Sherburne and Alphonse Pierre find good homes. That many people all at once would be an easy regroup imo.

I’ve liked Kings Of Leon’s Aha Shake Heartbreak since the first listening.
Just cheked it on Pitchfork because I wanted to know which other album of theirs could be worth a listening.
Then I saw it was rated 4.9.

I’m curious now how I discovered this album. I was so into Pitchfork at that time.
Not for their words, but the 7+ selection was interesting at that time.

They stopped giving out numbers because no one was reading their words

Ahah but they still do. And Animal Collective is still highly praised even if their output has been very sub-standard since 2010.

I actually found The Field through pitchfork so have to give them that if nothing else!

Ah, you’re right. They stopped putting them on the thumbnails, and it was too much work to click on everything to find out what they thought.

Goddamnit. Strawberry jam came out in 2007. And my time machine is still shit. Things are not looking up.
