Nice! Happy to see them pulling through in any capacity! Still hop on the Cobalt 8x that I gave my daughter once in a while. They make nice synths. I disagree with some minor UI choices, but overall they are quite good, sound excellent, and I also like the sounds coming from the Carbon.
Iâm confused by the video, an argon + a cobalt in one hood (instead of something different) is not what I expected âŠ
I wasnât sure what to expect since they call it a VA and the Cobalt was already a VA. Maybe they decided to squeeze all their tech into one synth to attract new users, rather than something more supplemental to the other two.
I think if they had added some, say, SSI2140 based analog filters, they would have made it a more distinctive instrument.
I really like the filter on the Cobalt. Iâm not sure if the Carbon is basically an Argon plus a Cobalt in one hood⊠I guess once it starts getting reviewed weâll know⊠but if it is itâll be a pretty powerful synth for sure
The article in Amazona talks some about the combination of the two previous, and about the filters. Not sure i understand it all, but so far what iâve heard sounds good.
Yes, especially after the update a while back.
SonicState has uploaded a new sounds-only video of the Carbon8⊠itâs not great. By which I mean, itâs just someone playing a bunch of presets and at most tweaking the filter here and there. So, we can tell that it sounds nice and there is a decent range of timbres that you can get from it. But there was no playing about with any of the underlying synthesis so all the Modal chat about how cool and unique itâs synthesis methods are remain a mystery for just now. Definitely one to keep an eye out for but if youâre hoping for insight then perhaps temper your expectations.
Youâre right. And this is what Jim Heywood does for SonicState after all the shows they go to with all the new keyboard equipment. Just the presets. But it is a nice balance to the normal talky show presentations you get the rest of the time, and gives an idea what the synth might sound like.
Weâll see when the review videos come along, to consider it from more of a sound design and performance perspective.
So far i like what theyâve got.
Aye, perhaps Iâm atypical. I donât get much new from this type of presentation - it doesnât really differentiate it from a whole host of other synths. But from what Modal are saying about how theyâve been developing it and what it can do⊠just keen to find out more about the oscillator alogirthims and modifiers to see/hear how they differentiate from the Argon/Cobalt. Patience is a virtue so Iâll be keenly interested when the time comes.
Itâs out and available ( in the USA at least ). Not sure on the total number in stock, but they are available.
There are fewer factory patches than what you might expect.
Iâm interested in this as I think the Argon and Cobalt both sound great. The price is real shaky though considering it looks like the same hardware as the other two synths. Itâs $300+ more new and those other two barely have value at the initial $780 price tag ( I regularly see the argon8 37 and cobalt8 37for under $500 used). The volatility of Modal as company also doesnât help.
Recall that they went bankrupt with the old prices.
Current retail price of the Argon and the Cobalt 37 Keys is $870 USD.
The prices on the Carbon8 are the same prices set a year back or so when it was a preorder.
That said i did notice a seller on Reverb that has stock and had a price $100 USD less with free shipping. ( $999 ) Iâve never heard of this retailer, so due dilligence.
Itâs legit to wonder about Modal going forward, but there is a new owner now.
Their website is broken, or has been scammed.
ADDED : Clarification. The Modal Website is fine. If you go to the âofficialâ Modal website provided by Google, it takes you to some bogus Instagram site. This is a Google problem.
I understand the MODAL app doesnât currently support the Carbon8.
As to price i see Kraft Music just added a $100 rebate, and i think other retailers are going to do the same. So price for the time being is $1000.
Notice also what i discovered above, the Modal web-site is just fine.
Looking for the Modal release video now, expect it to be along soon enough.
This is a Carbon8 Overview, which goes with the sound only video in the linked post above.
These might have been the stand in for a release video, if this synth had been released a year ago as originally planned.
The first five minutes of description is worth listening to, if you are like me and have forgotten what this synth is about.
Lots of morphing. I like the idea that they differentiate morphing wavetables, vs more standard wavetable transitions. What this means technically, i am not sure.
This guy is using a computer based editor so that exists.
As to this having a smaller number of factory presets. For many of us, so what ! If youâre not a preset sort of user, this like the Argon and the Cobalt, are on the easier side of synths for sound design.
The Modal site still redirected off-site for me. I closed the browser before being surprised again, but it was clearly a non-Modal site from the URL redirect and beginnings of page loading.
Just in case anyone wants to go there at work or something. Get your âclose browserâ action on just in case.
Does this link not work for you ? It always does for me. The Google directed link never works for me.
Phishing your money
Jokes on them I donât have any money
