Carbon8 from Modal

New website’s up.

Best of luck to them. I hope they can make the numbers work for them this time, it was a real shame they went under.

I am keeping in mind these are two different theys. It seems the new “they” is much more careful. What needs to happen though is that the new group needs to be able to keep vital the creative side of Modal that made it what it was in the first place, without all the volatility.

It sounds like, from what i’ve seen, that the new group has the right impulse.

The Carbon8 is pretty impressive, from everything i’ve heard so far, and gives a good place to begin again.

Looks sleek. But… what about the forests?

i don’t think it’s that deep, it’s just elements in the periodic table

Whenever I see the Argon8 I think of Dieter of Sprockets saying:

Karl Heinz, you are beautiful and angular…and if you were a gas , you’d be inert .

as an aside, for those that have played it, how are the onboard effects? I’m typically more keen on using external effect chains, but being able to push sound design beyond traditional sounds requires diligent use of onboard effects so i’m hoping they’re quality in comparison to the argon 8 (the V2s for instance, since so many complained about the reverb). IMO, not putting effort into having some really good onboard effects crimps a synth and really limits the potential.

Looks cool, but the name Carbon8 does make it sound like a brand of fizzy water for extreme sports enthusiasts.

The FX layer is adequate there a few vol jumps when switching between distortion reverb chorus etc. Mine sounds awesome but even better thru external FX

It has a very fuzzy fizzy sound actually. It’s like a scratchy wool blanket from a grandparent on a winter’s day.

Not quite hot cocoa level think more iced windows and a cracking fire.

Wow, sounds really impressive. Haven’t really had my eye on this synth at all but i’m now quite intrigued after checking out the other sound demos on the modal website… I’m especially liking the lush pads and those leads a lot.

On another note, I’m rly glad Modal seems to have been able to sort their financial situation out and dodge the potential bankruptcy so thy can get back to doing their thing - rly wouldn’t wanna see what happened recently with Ayodo repeat itself. I’m hoping the Carbon8 is a success for the team with lots of future sales.

same here. The only thing I am a bit worried about is the particular approach of the Carbon8. For me, it’s the best one of that series but it might be a challenge for Modal to introduce that product to the masses. Most users get subtractive, some FM, other Wavetable, and whilst Carbon8 is a bit of all, it also features a strong phase distortion and wave shaping engine. Great for textures, and dark tones but maybe not so easy to understand for some.
Full-on-sound-designers will be happy with it, for sure.
