Digitone II Headphone Audio Output Issue (?)

There must be some threshold before they have to do a “recall” or big announcement and it’s not near that (though this thread is growing still). 60 posts is nothing to ignore but also out of 5000 units probably not there.

In the software and hardware sales I do we’d also just address it per customer, even if it affected 50k units. Not saying its right or wrong. I also had a bad headphone unit that Sweetwater quickly replaced (two day shipping from when I called).

I’ve just fixed mine. It took less than an hour to replace the bad potmeter which costed like 2 EUR. Previously, I contacted Elektron Support but no support for DIY repair, not even information about root cause, replacement part number, etc. Quality control is a joke. At least, the design and build quality are good, very easy to repair.

So far I’ve heard very faint audio with the headphone output at 0 volume on all my Elektron units and these include Digitone II, Digitakt II, OG Digitakt, Digitone Keys, Analog Rytm MKII and Octatrack. So I’m guessing that this is normal behavior.

Can someone send me a Monomachine, Machinedrum and an Analog Four MKII so that I can test them out too? :joy:

On the Analog Four MKII, volume at 0 is dead silence, tested with closed cans and IEM’s.

Nice! Already replaced my unit (3rd time was the charm) but can you share more about the fix? What value pot, is it easy to access etc?

Also: what was the problem you were having and what’s the volume like at 0 now?

i’m nearly 3 months into using DNII and never realized that ! i got it too but i’m wondering what’s the use case using the devices at zero volume ? (mine has just a tiny bleed not that much )

Not much admittedly, but you could want to fade out at the end of a track while playing live. A workaround could be: instead of lowering the volume of the analog out, you could map a midi fader to the digital master out. Or use an external mixer. But now that’s more clutter for a fadeout.

Another use case is: if the output is too hot for the mixing table of the venue, you could want to lower the volume for it to sit just right. And if when you lower it the sound is uneven you’re going to have a bad time (but most modern mixing tables should be able to handle the full volume so that’s not that big a deal).

Original pot is Alpha RK14 series, exact part number is unknown. Parameters: dual gang (stereo), 2 x 10k “A” (audio/logarithmic), vertical, snap-in, PCB mounted, 6mm diameter 23mm D-shaft, 7-pin, no common pin, no center detent.

The replacement I found in the local shop is different brand, Alps, 20mm, common pin but just works fine.

Theoretically 20k instead of 10k would give less bleeding at 0 at the expense of slightly more noise.

Warranty is lost due to DIY repair, of course. Take this into account.

Do you get any sound at zero volume?

Yes, very low level but not dead silence.

Just unpacked a new Digitone 2. Have the same problem with the Outpul level. I turned the volume know completely down, on the left there is no audio on the right i still hear the sound. I will return it. I hope Elektron will comment on this as this seem to be a frequent bug in the hardware.

Elektron will not comment anything about the issue. This is how corporations work. If they acknowledge the issue they lose customers and also can be asked for compensation, even sued.
The good thing that it is not a design issue just a batch of bad components and poor quality control combo.
What to really hope is they put more efforts into quality control and product traceability.

I have the same issue (( Just opened my new Digitone II. Main Volume to 0 but I still hear sounds on right channel (( Batch 2024-W43
Does Elektron sends replacement parts to fix this?

If you ask for, yes.

I‘ll just add my experience to this list. When I wrote my post I couldn’t find any other posts related to this issue but either I didn’t look properly or the issue became very apparent since then.

My exchanged unit still runs smoothly but I also have the minimal audio bleed when the main volume is set to 0 (only noticed it with headphones though). I installed the latest firmware after unpacking and testing the new unit and I was under the impression that the audio bleed was less than before. But could be wishful thinking… first time I had some quality issues with an Elektron device.

I bought my unit at Sweetwater in USA but I live in Kazakhstan. returning the device will take very long time. I’ll wait couple days for getting answer from Elektron support. If there no answer the only chance is return device to Sweetwater. But there is no guarantee new device will come without defects.

I had Sweetwater test my replacement Digitone before sending, might save you some time.

I just got a new Digitone II which has this issue, what I do now. is this something might be addressed in the new framework upgrade ???

I would return it, I had mine successfully replaced.
