Digitone Keys - Discontinued? really?!

Your photo seems broken @Tchu. But I am very curious what’s on it!!

Edit: I see it now. Yeah, that message has been there for months now on the Elektron site.

That piece of crap bought them all

I’m sorry, I can’t resist.

We’ve really just gone from who is gonna buy this? to ah, nobody.

(I wouldn’t call it garbage though. Haphazard is about right.)

Square is definitely more an analog thing. Or sawtooth.

I see what you did there

Any more news on the Digitone Keys?

I find it weird that all the big box sites still have them up but out of stock and from researching still no new news that I can find.

I was hoping there would be some new version on the DNK coming down the pipeline!

No.

No news that there isn’t.

I would contact your Elektron reseller for when they anticipate delivery. My local reseller says that there will be more in stock “Soon™”

Realistically, there’s no real need to have a “mkii” with digital synths the same way there was with the USB chipset and minor analog changes with the Analog series.

If you want it, pick it up the next time you find it available at a price you want.

There is no reasonable reason to wait beyond not giving in to GAS if you have enough synths already.

Edit: Yeah, as per @dzyndzel just talk to your preferred seller.

@everroen
wouldn’t you rather have a nice analog keys instead? I asked them back in feb and they confirmed it is new and not used.

I hate it when something seems to soon no longer be available. I love my Digitone so much but don’t need a keys version. But it makes me nervous that I would one day want one and they cost like 5.000€ then.

I contacted Elektron customer support twice over the passed few weeks. They were kind enough to respond saying they ‘have no ETA at the moment’.

Remember, despite what’s being posted across the web forums, there is still no official announcement that it has been discontinued. We can only speculate. Perhaps its component shortages related to the keys.

Maybe like what Yamaha is doing with the Montage, Elektron can discontinue the Digitone Keys just so they can bring it back.

Six months later, I think a component supply chain issue is still by far the most likely explanation. There’s no other plausible reason they would keep it in this limbo state of not-discontinued-but-not-available.

I think it’s potentially more nuanced than a shortage, though. To paraphrase my comment from January: It may be that a component is not just taking a long time to become available; it may be that the supplier no longer makes that component. In that case, Elektron would have to source a replacement and perhaps slightly redesign a PCB or two. Hardly an impossible task, but one that would take time.

Alternatively, they could eventually decide it’s not worth the cost and cancel DNK after all, but for now, they’re evidently keeping their options open.

Possible except generally you have a good notice of a coming shortage, plus a small amount of stock ( on both sides ), that gives you time to do the redesign.

As i just posted this happened to ASM, and there was no hiccup in supply of the Hydrasynths. What it did cost them apparently though was engineering time on new design.

Everything crumbles to dust, don’t get so worried to lose the one you’ve got that you don’t appreciate it while it’s here!

Things have been fuckier as of the last several years, generally. EOL yes, “shortage” no.

… generally …

OK, so anything planned you have notice, and time.

What if the factory burns down for one of the two to three single source parts in your design. You still have whatever is in stock, whatever is in the supply chain, plus whatever finished product, you and your wholesalers have in stock. Given that it is a single source part, and you having gone to grade school, you keep extra single source parts in stock.

Besides that, what single source part is in the Keys that is not in the regular Digitone ? Well could be something in the keyboard. Except that is made by Fatar ( right ? ) and i don’t think anyone else, has had the same issue. Well maybe it’s in the KB, interface. But that’s going to be mostly jelly-bean multiple source parts.

Plus this has already been going on for quite a while.

So yeah, it’s possible it’s some strange thing like that. Just it’s unlikely.
