Honestly, I’ve not found anything in software with the exact combination of looper and effects interacting with each other that’s on the Mood - it’s pretty much unique. To build an approximation you’d probably need to use a combination of devices and take time to set up the controls and routing - personally I gave up after concluding that I’d need to stop making music for weeks and just work on this to get even close.
I think that these devices are in a similar ballpark insofar as they create soundscapes from relatively simple source materials - I’ve always liked Strata, although I think it’s a bit closer to Soma Cosmos than Mood in terms of how it works and the results you get.
Thanks all. I suppose there is not 1 plugin that can replace / mimic Mood MK2, also because mood does a lot, reverb, glitchy delay, looping, etc. You would probably need several plugins to get there…
I think Generation Loss MK2 is probably easier to mimic with plugins!
I don’t know much about MOOD, but I use Puremagnetik apps all the time. Drfitmaker is the most important for that unpredictable looper/delay effect (and it’s free!). Fragment can also do unsynced dual looping, though I haven’t used it as much. And those are just the free/very cheap ones. Their granular & spatial effects are also lots of fun, but I would wait until they go on sale, which is pretty often.
FWIW, I‘ve mostly circled back to pedals. I just hate to spend too much time on the computer making music. It’s necessary for recording, arranging and some EQ. But I found that I just hate to dial in effects on my laptop and get faster and better results with hardware, even though recording can be a pita. That rings especially true for the more experimental plugins like Other Desert Cities. Great plugin and I would love that in a pedal, but I just don’t want to use it looking at a screen for an hour.
GoodHertz makes excellent shit. The Vulf Compressor is their most famous, it’s based off the Roland SP-303 vinyl sim compressor but it has a lot more control (the original is more of a one knob affair). Tupe is a very good tape / tube colorizing distortion.
There are other things like Lossy but Lossy is so good. I also like Aberant Dsps Digitalis which does a lot of similar stuff in a different way. Their ShapeShifter compressor and Sketch Cassette 2 plugins are also very good.
What delay and chorus plugins would you recommend for replicating those of DN? I want to use Overbridge more but love the way the ping pong delay and chorus sound on DN. The ping pong on any other delay pedal or plugin I’ve used so far is different from Elektron’s, which pans a lot less “on the nose” and really musically.
Ideally, I would just throw an Ableton stock plugin that isn’t taxing on the CPU on the individual dry tracks. I also have Valhalla Delay, but that could probably be a bit too taxing. Thankful for what to try out before diving in!
have you tried Echo? it’s almost identical to me except the fact you can’t control the stereo direction, the Echo ping pong always stars left, but you can simply throw a Utility after to swap left right…
example of the delays pretty much leveled, but not with too much detail… can you guess which is which?
On paper it seems too basic for the price, but it just does its thing so well and it sounds really good.
It basically allows you to play back an extra layer of sound (either from pre-loaded noise sources or your own samples) that’s triggered by an audio input or midi. I think being able to use my own textural samples and shape their sound with an envelope, filter, and pitch, puts it in Mood territory, but it’s much more controllable.
echo is very capable, the built in reverb is very cool, the channel time offset insta stereo and spread heaven, but if you leave it on basic setup and use the filter and the channels synced it’s pretty much the same as DN, but it can be much more which is very cool, I suggest iterating the presets, they show how capable it is
Does anyone know of a plugin that’s good for compressing/coloring/filtering your signal in a way that’s similar to the Oto Boum?
I’m considering selling my Boum if I could replace its sound with software. Given that its analog, I’m not expecting a plugin to fully match it, but is there something that comes close?
