But the point is - Deluge has never been ‘king’ of shit, let alone ‘king of the sampling groove box’. Its for people who get excited by ‘possibilities’ in the same way others get excited by linux.
MPCs (especially the old Linn ones) are kings of drum groove samplers. The Deluge isnt ever going to touch that - nor was it designed to.
Deluge has carved out a niche of doing the most amount of things - but in my opinon not very well. Its best feature for me is the grid layout. But i have tried knocking funky loops out of it and its a painful experience to sound right.
Even trying to find good examples on youtube is hardwork. Its mainly people faffing about trying to sound like Boards of Canada.
Anyhow Im sure you guys are having fun and i dont want to piss on anyones chips. Its just the thread title narked me a bit.
Everyone has their own preference of choice. If the workflow fits, it fits. Ive been on that journey, discovering what fits me best and with what kind of music i make. Bought and sold many many “boxes”.
For me, right now, the deluge is my main driver to produce music on the go.
Here something short made fully on the deluge without any post FX. The deluge can sing.
A friend of mine is crazy about the Deluge, and I reckon the open source aspect is really fascinating.
Yet I still have to see a single demo that impresses me. Maybe because I don’t know the box…
But @jones79 made a point here: please drop some hard hitting groove made on the Deluge to proove with facts OP’s point, ie : “Deluge is the King of Sampling grooveboxes"
Now I feel like the debate is getting a bit sour/bitter, which is something that is very displeasing for everyone including those that use it: please let’s come back to a more friendly tone, or, if you can’t, consider leaving this discussion that puts you in too insecure a place…
Depends what folks are into, but this guy Filmmaker makes all his music on a Deluge, plays his live gigs on one too, I think he records a synth into it and switches them up on his releases.
His stuff sounds killer if you’re into darkwave/post punk/electro type stuff.
I’ve had a Deluge in the past, didn’t quite gel with it due to the lcd screen like and the reverb was tinny, but apparently the new reverb sounds great on it.
If they released a Deluge 2 with a larger screen and able to see the waveforms on the screen, I’d probably be all over it though.
I use the Deluge in my livesets mostly as a hihat machine. Love that the whole pattern is visible at once, and people really groove with it. So, i guess for me the Deluge really is the “stack against similar devices” of the hill in 2024
I can, instantly, load 40 or 50 (or even more, a whole folder with one click) into a kit. Each sample goes on it’s own row, with it’s own envelopes, eq, LFO’s, filters etc.
Each row can have a different length, I can zoom in and micro-time any note so easily.
All this happens so quickly and smoothly it’s insane. Total flow state.
I do however, have an issue with the sound quality, so I wouldn’t use it to program main drum loops for finished songs.
If the Deluge had 8 outs and perhaps better converters etc it would be all I need to make music!
