Make Noise 0-coast

Bass for days

Incredible sound, more powerful/flexible than it looks. I thought I wanted a Matriarch but I’m glad I ended up with a GM. It won’t scratch all of the modular itches, but… I’d actually suggest someone with $1,000 wanting to get into modular could do worse than start with a used GM and then pick up a used 0-Coast to go with it.

I finally sat myself down for a good coasty drone session in front of a big ass Genelec subwoofer. My god that thing morphs, rattles and shakes…

Just 0-coast and H9. Good stuff happening down at 19 and 38Hz

Are there ways to keep Dynamics full open other than 1) triggering the gate and setting the Contour envelope to sustain and 2) sending the attenuverter into Dynamics (drone patch from the manual)? Asking because I’m using method 1 and using the attenuverter for something else but would like to free up the envelope for other duties. I’m using the Slope env already elsewhere too.

You could set up the midi to CV converter on its own midi channel and send it a high note for constant voltage. Or find any source of ~5v, like the mod strip cv find a Keystep.

I was hoping to avoid external gear but using the midi B gate might be the easiest way for me indeed.

As I continue with downsizing-your-hardware-2024, I might make 0-coast my entire (semi) modular setup. It was the first piece of patchable kit I bought, and I never spent hardly any time exploring it properly before charging on to more modules and a case.

This thread is reminding my how much could be done with it, especially with octatrack sending midi CC and LFOs to its midi B channel.

I’m having a nightmare with the MIDI B options. I’ve set it to its own channel and to output note data. It only appears to send note data on 3 or 4 actual notes though. It’s likely just be being a massive noob with these but I can’t see what I’ve set wrong.

And to follow this up…….

After speaking to their tech support for a while I did a recalibration and it’s now working great.

The support at Make Noise is wonderful.

I love very slow lfo’s. From my testing it s not possible to get the tap tempo inputs on the coast to catch real slow tempi, is it? I think it maxes out at 1,5-2sec periods.

I think you’re right about the tapped lfo. The Slope goes super slo tho.

Walker is my hero. I’ve seen loads of his videos. The way his brain works - it’s beautiful

Yep. And midi triggered contour. Though I wish the onset could go slower on that one.

I’m kind of surprised there isn’t a module version of this and Strega. Maybe it’s for obvious reasons I haven’t thought of or maybe they’ve discussed it. I have the desktop version but now that I’m into Eurorack, it’d be cool to get it in the rack!

I think the 0 Coast and co. are supposed to be a Make Noise Greatest Hits. IIRC their routing is mostly based on existing MN modules normalled in a particular way.

i do kinda wish there was a way i could set up the 3 semi-modulars side by side in a row like a typical eurorack. the power coming on the left side means you gotta lay them out vertically.

They kinda did for 0-Coast…
DPO
Wogglebug
Function
Contour
Dynamix

While most parts were borrowed from existing MN modules, 0-Coast spawned off Function, Contour, and Dynamix. All 3 are retired (but you can still buy Function for a little longer).

There is an option to solder the power to the back allowing it to sit flush with other modules.

I don’t know this site, but they go over pros/cons well and they mention wanting to stay clear of the solder option. I believe some brave souls did that on MW, but I can’t remember for sure.

thanks for sharing. too DIY for me, but interesting to see it done.
