MOTU Ultralite MK5

I only had this once but wasn’t related to the motu, it was a mac glitch and every device had pops and clicks, after reboot it was gone completely and never happened again. (M1 Ultra)
maybe it’s something about the usb connection? cable/hub/port?

nope, but if motu would grace us with midi control for cuemix5 then it would be possible with a macro I guess, I’m trying to find a proper way to send a feature request for that but can’t find anything except the tech support form.

I had click and pop issues that were resolved by switching to better ADAT cables. In case you use ADAT, this might fix your issues.

I’m using USB C but the cable isn’t great…. I’ll try to test it with a better one

Do you still have the cables that came with the device? They’re beefier than most normal USB cables

Unfortunately it didn’t came with them… Bought it used from a user from this forum, and a friend of mine brought it over to where I live (Argentina).
I’ll try other cables and report back, hope that might be it.

in case someone missed it, new firmware update was released recently that brings some new functionality, you can now setup password for the device, setup A/B monitoring, something something Talkback and other stuff, looks like some of the new 828 features been implemented for the ULmk5 as well.

oh yeah, you can control your ULmk5 now from an iPad even that it’s connected to another mac, they only need to be on the same network, just turn on Network Control:

and bam…

I haven’t tried it yet, but it doesn’t seem to solve the problem of having 2 MK5 connected via ADAT and being able to change the mix of the ADAT follower.
Anyone else in here using 2 MK5? If so, how do you setup them?

Maybe there’re few Mk4 on the used market because Mk5 didn’t bring anything substantial over Mk4, and lacks some essential things that Mk4 has, like the rouning matrix, the operating system-agnostic web interface (hello Linux), the belonging to Motu Pro Audio interfaces family with their own pro audio drivers (Mk5 is not in that family), rugged rack-ready case.

Getting you to post again after 3 years may be my greatest achievement.

Ha! I has been researching Mk5 across all over the internet and for some reason ended up in this obscure forum for summing up the reasons for talking myself out of buying Mk5.

finally had the time to write a feature request for midi control of cuemix, don’t know what to expect I’m not a longtime motu user but the support rep promised to forward it to the devs, so… :crossed_fingers:

maybe if someone else wants midi control for cuemix can also send them feature requests, now that it’s been used for the new 828 imo there’s a good chance they’ll pay attention.

Anyone else having problems with the latest firmware on iPad?

I updated via my Mac and it works fine there, but on my iPad I only get distorted sounds from audio apps. It was rock solid on my iPad until this update.

I’ve tried restarting everything, resetting to factory settings and changing sample rates, but no joy.

I’ve opened a ticket with Motu and I’ll update here if I get any new info.

Every time they update this thing, something on the iPad gets busted. It’s a pain in the ass.

It’s super annoying as I didn’t plan on updating, but Cuemix 5 updated from the app store and then told me that the firmware version on the Ultralite wasn’t supported…

Lame. I auto-updated Cuemix on iPad but I’ve not upgraded my interface yet. It’s core to my hardware setup as well. Disappointing :frowning:

I promised myself to never buy Apogee again because they tend to have short shelf-lives because of the lack of support for older models… and once I upgrade my computer the apogee couldn’t come with me. Which is a real shame because they make really good stuff… but also not cheap!

A few months back I went with a MOTU Ultralite MK5. I have to say I am really pleased with it. What are people’s experiences of support for older models in regards being kept up to date for compatibility with OS updates etc when it comes to MOTU seeing as we are on that subject?

Update: Motu got back to me and said they hadn’t had any similar reports and suggested downgrading to previous firmware to see if that helped.

Tried that and same problems.

So in desperation I upgraded back to the newest firmware and - tada - it works again.

So perhaps I just had an unlucky experience and something got borked on the first try.

For me, the ability to easily connect an iPad for remote control is very handy (I could do it already from the hack shared earlier in this thread, but now it’s much easier.)

MOTU has a very good reputation regarding this. For example, the Ultralite MK3 was released in 2008 or 2009 and they still release drivers for recent Mac OS versions with M1/M2/M3 support.

Thanks… and that’s great to hear!

I’m looking to buy an interface with the exact feature set that the MOTU Ultralite mk5 has, but I have been reading horror stories online about crackling, delays, and having to use it in class compliant mode (low latency is precisely why I want to get it). Can anyone with a Macbook Pro M1 Pro/Max confirm if the issues were solved with latest drivers, firmware? Thanks!
