This is finally available on Prime in the US for a rental fee. Highly recommended.
I’m gonna check that out. Have you seen Guardian Angel from 1987? I’m unable to find a trailer online. It has a great performance by Šaban Bajramović in it. Very sad, dark film…
Not sure if you have the Criterion Channel streaming service there but they use to have it with subtitles.
Did anyone mention Emily the Criminal?
Very good. Hard to believe a first time director and writer. Nice synth soundtrack adds a lot to it.

Me and someone else we’re having some chat about it a month or so ago back in the thread. Agree that it is very good
Finally watched The Banshees of Inisherin just now. Fantastic, as expected.
Just watched the Northman and about halfway through a guy I know popped up in it.
He was credited one name below willem Defoe so that’s not bad.
I watched Smile. It’s sort of a spiritual cross between It Follows and The Ring, a creeping horror is following the protagonist, eroding her sanity, while a ticking clock counts down to her doom. I was curious if two hours would feel long for such a simple setup, but they kept the tension tight the whole time. Also, that ending…woof…way to stick the landing
Watched the new Avatar with my nephews. It’s nice enough to look at, but you do wonder why James Cameron feels so compelled to do these. It’s essentially a remixed HQ version of the first movie. Maybe the next ones will veer off the beaten path, but it was kinda wild how many guns were in the film. Would have been cool to see more ingenious native weaponry rather than just a bullet fest. Still, I don’t know if there was any message in this film that differed from the previous. I guess it’ll be a nice legacy, and it’s also easy to forget how technically incredible the films are since they do it all so flawlessly. But I dunno, not that these films need to be anything more than they are. On a professional level you can simply say it’s good you back yourself into a project. But even as a kids-esque movie the tone just reeks of guns and violence, I wonder if there’s some other narrative or approach he could focus on.
Just watched ‘You Wont Be Alone’ (2022) - a semi-arthouse semi-horror film that reminded me of ‘Under The Skin’. It was great, but def not for everyone.
Really enjoyed that one. Colin Farrell is, simply, fantastic.
I can imagine it’s a film that’ll resonate highly with anyone who has lived in Ireland through “challenging” periods.
I watched The Menu and thought it was fun. It’s like The Wicker Man in a restaurant. There’s something tremendous in seeing great British actors, like Fiennes, perform in such a serious yet knowingly hammy way. High Grants been doing it a lot recently too.
And last night I watched Army of Darkness with my youngest. Still a hoot. I learned there’s two versions of the movie as the one I watched had a bit of a crappy happy ending to it. Much prefer the “overslept “ ending!
I watched The Menu with my wife this weekend, and we both liked it. Wickedly funny movie that balanced suspense and humor. I’d say it’s enjoyable both for people in foodie culture and for those who think foodie culture is ridiculous. Ralph Feinnes absolutely owned the role. I can’t imagine anyone else capturing that weird blend of magnetism, menace, and manic intensity
Yeah!!
Cristobal Tapia de Veer!
His stuff is so good and really exciting/different.
First noticed him when he did the (original) Utopia series for Channel 4 (UK)
His recent work on the White Lotus is incredible.
Think he is a really good fit for horror and can’t wait to see what he does next.
I thought Smile was pretty good. I thought after the first 30 mins or so it was really going to shit me up (like Hereditary did) but I got less scared as it went on, which was a little disappointing. But overall, not bad. Thought the cinematography was the standout. Really uneasy framing and panning throughout. Loved that aspect of it.
Hereditary really fucked me up. Seen a lot, but this one was evil. And terror somehow.
I really liked it a lot as well!
One day I will make a fan edit and remove that lady doing exposition at the end, just have the music playing.
Shameless plug: I did the score for this film and it just came out last week!
" Summoned to his soon-to-be demolished childhood home, Mason discovers an old VHS camera that can see into the past, driving him to record as many memories as possible before the doomed house is destroyed.
Utilizing the director’s own home movies, filming in the actual locations where he spent his youth and casting real-life family members to play fictionalized versions of themselves, LandLocked combines narrative and documentary with horror and sci-fi to create a movie unlike any other…"
Here’s the soundtrack:
Thanks for the recommendation. I loved this film - it’s a really beautiful, existential and quite poetic film full of folklore too. Definitely not for everyone but I know I will watch it again for sure. I found some of the dialogue / script really unusual. I am not sure if that is because something was lost in translation in the English subs but either way it made it even more special imo. Maybe I read too much into things. The freakier side of it didn’t register with me in a typical way either. I just related it all as visual metaphor rather than watching it so literally.
