This year I could make it
already bought everything. M8 updates are free. still learning new stuff to do with OT. still figuring out what to even do with A4. if toneverk is granular synthesis monstrosity I will even yawn. I have 5 minutes on record with omnisphere. omnisphere cost $500. S-1 is my pad hammer and it’s got a battery. I think this year i will make a bunch of fun music with it all. this is fun
It’s like sin, the moment you think about it, you’re already ruined.
Every single one in here has already failed since waking up or will fail very soon
software doesn’t count
I’m in! Last year was a tough one with some hard-won milestones that I rewarded with new gear (DT 2 and DN 2), but learning new devices meant leaving behind unfinished projects. I’ve returned to one of them in the last few weeks, and between finishing 2 or 3 sets and learning last year’s gear and software inside and out, I’ll have plenty to do. It’s a 3-part New Year’s resolution …
I’m thinking about a bit of a refocus this year, slightly away from making music and maybe looking at gigs and maybe starting a label.
I’ve also still got a lot to learn with Max/MSP and now I’ve sold everything except my laptop I’ve got no excuse.
Lyras don’t count though, right?
Funny, I got a 3rd Wave (desktop) about 6 months ago and just haven’t gotten on with it. Thinking of selling that and putting the funds towards some travel this year if you’re interested in getting that one.
Other than that, I expect I’ll be in for NGNY, maybe some software as budget permits These days I’m shopping luggage and college textbooks so I think I won’t have any money for synths anyways.
Obviously depends on the colour.
i think this sounds like quite a good strategy regarding the push 3, there’s tons to get into there.
I’m not joining this year. I like gear too much.
I have never joined, but I’ve learned a lot from reading these threads, and I think they’ve had an effect on my spending patterns, even if they weren’t reduced to zero. I look forward to the reading again this year.
I’m in. I’ve bought and sold a lot in the last two years, and with Ableton Suite and the Push, I’m finally in a place where any more gear just gets in the way.
So this year, I will save up and buy a good piano, and nothing more.
I have only experienced satisfaction on one device, the Digitone, which I bought four years ago. Since purchasing the Digitone, bought a Digitakt, a Woovebox, an M8, a Retrokits MIDI recorder and a Dexibel keyboard. I have used all those other devices at some point for projects or live playing. But, hardly at all when compared to the Digitone.
Because of my success with the Digitone, I imagined I could achieve similar successes on other gear. And learning new gear was fun, right? Maybe not. In my old age, it seems the fun of learning new gear is evaporating for me. Especially in light of the artistic failures I’ve experienced on new gear that wasn’t the Digitone.
As others also have said, I’d rather refine and deepen my understanding of a single device (or limited setup) than succumb to a cycle of constant disruption with new gear. That is easy for me to say, because I have clicked so well with the Digitone.
All this, I think, makes me a good candidate for NGNY25.
I got in trouble on the NGNY thread a few years ago, for calling out others’ gratuitous displays of falling-off-the-wagon. Imagine a thread about remaining monogamous, on which someone admits to unfaithfulness but also posts pictures of the person they hooked up just to help us understand just how hot they were.
I made a lot of swaps and downsizings in my set-up. Just ended with DNII + DTII + iPad and waiting to receive a Minifreak Stellar & a NTS-3
The last update on Minifreak (granular) should calm down my GAS for granular things and I removed Torso S-4, Lemondrop from my whishlist. Arturia said that they are working on the import of samples. Hope they will do it fast.
2025 should be a no new gear for me.
The only gear I miss is the Dreadbox Typhon I already had…
Currently I have a push 3 and handpan. This will be all I need and want this year.
Might buy Kick3 VST and a gForce OB-X vst if I can get a good deal on them.
I don’t think it makes sense for me to commit this year because I know I’ll want to buy a new pair of headphones and possibly a mic/lavalier. But I do think 2025 will be a year of consolidation and fewer purchases than 2024.
I’d love a 3rd Wave but I don’t have enough money for that (even a used one) and it is just a little bit too long to fit into my tiny studio space. But thanks anyway.
I am on board to do it for at least another year.
