embarrassing, I was certain my calculations were correct
Just sold both the MPC Live 2 and MC-101. I now only have the Syntakt and SP-404 MKII left. I’ll probably sell the SP too as I don’t find it fun to use.
So, this year I’ve really downsized. Despite slipping up and buying and trading a super cheap Digitakt ($350) for an SP-404 MKII, I’ve SOLD:
- Hydrasynth Explorer
- MPC Live 2
- MC-101
- Korg Minilogue XD
It feels great to downsize and focus. To be fair though, I have been GASing for the Push 3 quite a bit but it’s cooling off with all the QC issues reported despite its off-putting price point. And besides, it doesn’t look like a very ergonomic device given its bulky size, especially not for someone with a preference for using my grooveboxes in bed.
The line between early adopter and beta tester does blur. Better to sit it out indeed!
I’ve sold SP-404 MKII and J-6 (Roland workflow for the lose), and also more recently a Dreadbox Typhon - its a fine synth but the Syntakt’s analog bass is much more accessible. I have a core of Syntakt, Digitone and a Stage Piano left. Also an electric bass.
I bought a studio lighting setup for YouTube videos which is of course not music gear. It is pretty likely I’ll cave and buy a guitar sooner rather than later. I’ve become more interested in performance instruments and I miss noodling on guitar.
free or paid? ableton saturator is great actually, there’s voxengo tube as well
you also have some very subtle saturation on TDR SlickEQ and Molotov and Softube the one knob saturator is free
I also have the blackbox from PA for free during some promo or something, it’s pretty good too, probably will be available in another promo
I’ve heard that the Softube one-knob saturator is great. Never carefully auditioned it but I’m sure it’s good.
Klanghelm’s MJUc is a great compressor and I think they have a grrat saturation too, and neatly précédent.
Edit: also, this is kinda gear talk
I deliberately suggested a free tool though.
I mean, if you allow free vst it kind of defeats the point of going deeper with what you have.
The way I see it, it’s more a mindset of keeping yoir setup under control than having a net zero expense at the end of the year.
true but really the practice is not buying gear, new or second hand, so if someone wants to avoid GAS for new heat by getting some free vsts, assuming he doesn’t have any, that’s not bad idea
I’ve been able to avoid buying any new gear so far. My spare funds went to taxes and home repairs.
My pre order for a xdj 700 did run out, and they are hard to find. I did not renew it, as its now sparsly available, but do i need it really…also osmose order, not sure, push 3 sounds more tempting now, but i realize i didnt use push one much. I stick with analog 4 and mpc u think.
Ok, so if I take the addiction analogy, taking a free drink from a friend is not okay. The idea is not “not buying gear”, but getting out of the constant cycle of changing your setup, letting go of the consumerist idea that adding new stuff to your studio will help you. Going deep instead of going wide.
Also, I feel weird taking specific gear on a no gear discussion, kinda like discussing which liquor brand offers free samples in an AA meeting
Anyway, just my opinion. You could also compare it to a nicorette patch, so helpful, I don’t know.
good point, probably should’ve been asked in a different thread
I can’t remember what sort of commitment I made here, but if I am on the list, take me off please. Not sure if I should say what I bought because there’s no question that it disqualifies me (I want to respect the ethos of this thread and don’t want to cause any GAS here).
JUNKIE TALK
Anyway, it’s now stuck in customs, so there’s (Korg) Karma for you.
Have sold a lot more than I’ve bought so far though, and about to sell some more so I just have the leanest possible setup so feeling OK about it.
Ha! Being a “friend of Bill W.” and sober for over 30 years, that’s a great metaphor. Had the same feeling when I decided not to mention what purchase I made which takes me off the NNGY 2023.
I’m out, bought that - it will round out my instruments well, I can’t see a need for any more for a long time.
So I’ve successfully moved across country for a new job, which required my partner quit theirs and we nearly halve our income.
Hoo boy what revelations!
I want to think I am nearly detached from stuff, at least from stuff I don’t own.
