Plinky

is the guy selling them on eBay the original guy ?

No he’s not, that’s why they’re labeled as ā€˜clone’.

ok thanks

My eBay clone Plinky came today. I’ll post some pictures at some point later.

It looks as it should except for the Plinky lettering saying PlinknT instead (see the eBay link above). The plastic holder is 3d printed but mine was perfectly adequate with only one minor sign of glitch on the surface. Depth, strength etc all fine.

I’ve mounted mine in my eurorack and briefly tested the synth. I set the sequencer to latch and sent clock from Pam’s and gate and cv from Digitone via a midi2cv converter. Once I pressed the correct note it latched and responds to transport, i.e stops/starts on cue. I quickly played with the envelope and fx parameters and everything seems to correspond with the icons.

From this first test I think I got a bargain

Has there been anything notable in firmware updates since the plinky launch?

By the way, thonk finally updated their page, basically saying they have no idea if or when they are going to get new batches. They did however close the waitlist for new sign-ups, as there are 6000 people on it.

So, probably better to buy the clones or build them yourself

I’ve just received mine. Using it standalone as I don’t have Euro.
So far so good - so on the path to absolute no-brainer bargain status…but can’t help feel I want to have power via something other than usb…so maybe I need to start the Euro thing :sob:

How are you getting on?

I’ve just taken my first step into Eurorack and am wondering what you’re doing to access the USB features (like the web editor)

Are you unmounting and remounting to update samples, for example? I’ve seen an expander design that should negate the need to do this - but it’s less readily available than the plinky itself - currently looking at the https://jlcpcb.com/ site and wondering if there is an easier solution I’ve missed.

I looked at the expander too but couldn’t get hold of one at the time. I’ve since sold the Plinky and I didn’t use it to its fullest. I basically used it as a cv driven synth voice, using the arpeggiator quite a bit. I think if I’d figured out how to use the polyphony better I might have kept it. Good luck.

My daughter (5yrs) loves it - and I am a hoarder - so it’s staying for now.
Possibly time to get the soldering iron out!

I loved the sound and great that your daughter likes it!

Just fyi:

Thonk has a (new?) Page for the Plinky V3 with some text hinting it might come 2024 - and seemingly with a new wait list. I was on the list for the V2 and I had to join the wait list again on this one.

If you’re still waiting for a plinky it might be a good idea to join the wait list there

Ok I watched this video and I am in love. I have the Softpop 2 already but it looks like there is a wait list for Plinky (and that’s if they make more…).

Is there anything you can recommend me that works and feels similar?

Thonk is finally getting more kits for Plinky (now V3, with a simplified build process and some hardware improvements). There is a wait list, but more are being made after a very long interlude.

Thanks. I will sign up.

A heads up, a few days ago I got the email that it was my turn to buy a Plinky V3 Diy Kit and I just had to - should be already on its way!

I got on to the original waiting list at around place numbero 2 - 3000ish

There seems to be hope!
