Yeah, that post you responded to mentions this exact thing lol.
Maybe I quoted the wrong part. You can definitely send individual drum sounds in a drum rack to the main sends.
You just need to route the drum rack sends to the main sends.
its not clear from the context in what aspect Force is significantly worse? When it comes to buttons, its definitely better but overall I’d agree its worse .
Nice! Didn’t know you could do that!
Would be surprised if such a preset rack didn’t work in standalone.
@romanicks posted a solution above, it’s not the same as using the internal Rack returns.
This is amazing!
That’s great to know, but it still doesn’t solve the standalone problem unfortunately. Once it’s set up, you still can’t access or change any of the per-pad send amounts. They would need to fix it so that you can access that from the Push.
If you load a drum kit with these things set up, the send amounts will be hardcoded to the pads of that drum kit. Replacing a sound with another one will retain the send amounts used for the previous sample.
Yeah, that works well from Live, but how do you set/change the default project template on the Push? Anyone knows?
Edit: found out via the Ableton forum: it’s apparently not possible to change the default project template yet.

Looks like there isn’t a way. You’d just have to save a template project and then Shift+ Save will duplicate the project and then when in the project browser push the wheel to the right (the thing where the whole wheel moves, not turning the wheel) and you’d be able to rename to something else.
Thanks. There is one post (July) where it’s measured and the result was poor. Wondering whether things have got better since then.
How about making a macro with pad send amounts? It works for me in Ableton 12 beta, and the Macros should show up on any Push.
Okey so I was able to solve this, from standalone, using the first method I mentioned above.
- Create an Audio track
- Set the Track Input to a Drum rack pad (ie. 606/Snare)
- Set Monitoring to Input
- Set Track Output to Sends only (so that the audio isn’t duplicated)
You can now use this snare aux track to set its global Send levels
I was talking about operating the buttons. It’s been months since I had my hands on a Force, but as I recall, its buttons also required a lot of force, and I often used my thumbs with fingers braced against the side of the box. My memory might be too foggy regarding the comparison with Push 3.
So a parallel mix track essentially. Good to know that there are ways to do it (the macros approach being another one) but honestly given the way I make music with hardware as a groovebox/sketchpad, either of those approaches are too fiddly for me to even bother with it. I think I’ll just keep my drums dry until it’s time to mix in Live. And if I need a set of ambient samples, I’ll probably just put those on a separate drum rack and call it a day.
Let’s hope that Ableton thinks the standalone immediacy through a bit more over the coming firmware upgrades and I’m sure this will be more straightforward at some point.
Actually, you can change send amounts per pad inside a kit. Just unfold the kit track, so you see each pad in a different column, then go to the Mixer view and select the sends.
Thats weird, I have both Push 3 and Force and Force has buttons that are easier to push.
Like you need less force to push buttons on the Force than on the Push?
No, this does not work.
Yes you can, needs to be setup within Ableton Live first, then you can save as a default device preset/template
Well I’ve tried the above and can report that it does not work. I already explained the results above.
Must be user error works fine here
