Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 1)

In Canada, yes. The only reports of actual ship/rec are coming from Canada.

But again… has Roland literally provided an official release date for the US & Europe?

In the future only youtuber’s and influencer’s will be able to get new devices and the “normal” people will have to wait ten years or buy it from them.

Or fight it out Hunger Games style.

Is that the same thing as a Schrodingers Sp404 mk II ? (there, and then, not there).

At least in my experience, this really doesn’t fly with most large scale manufactures. To get to a competitive cost and margin health, you need to procure raw materials and pre-finished parts (coming from third parties), build/setup up any in-house tooling, get lines set up and scheduled for assembly, testing, and packing, etc. At minimum, a company like Roland would have done all of their buying and manufacturing/distribution plans to meet their minimal break-even point, and those plans would probably have been created and contracted out before a single test unit was created. Outside of that, spooling lines down then back up adds risk in QA/consistency, and supply-chain delays that most mfg’s look to avoid.

In the US, it will be known as an SP-304

Also, I caught up to about 800 posts in this thread over the past week. About 500 posts ago, I put in a pre-order for a mk2.

The Japan release date is November 19. I’m not sure why Canada is releasing before that, other than they got the first units. I read that Roland is having to air ship some initial units because of the global shipping problems.

Roland knows Canadians are too polite to say anything bad about the first units.

Apparently they are air freighting a small initial batch to various places around the world, but the later stuff is going to get pushed to February+ because it is relying on normal shipping.

A rep at Sweetwater told me I missed the cutoff for all of their allotted November units and I won’t get mine until after February. My preorder confirmation email from Sweetwater arrived in my inbox at 12:08 a.m. on 10/13. Wild that some lucky folks just to north already got their hands on them in October.

I’m hoping that these will hit Japan earlier because of fewer shipping issues, but most shops online here say that they are now accepting orders for next year. I got my order in on Oct 15, and was told at the time I would probably miss the first batch and at the time they were expecting a second batch in December, but not sure if that has changed.

Interestingly, I saw an article in Japanese that said they were originally forecasting selling 15,000 units globally the first year. I wonder if demand is much more than expected or still in line with this.

I wonder if that 15,000 is just related to what they can produce and ship or if that is their evaluation of the market. If the latter, wild. They could hock 15,000 of these babies with a busking amp playing Dilla for a weekend on any LA street corner.

Yeah, that number struck me as low, but honestly I have no idea what annual hardware sampler sales are like these days for major companies. But if they were planning on selling 15,000 units and demand is 10x or more then I can imagine they could run into some problems keeping up, especially given the state of global supply chains.

Also, one bit of vagueness, but the Japanese technically says 初年度, which means “first fiscal year”. Japanese companies’ fiscal years typically end at the end of March, so there is a possibility that’s how many they expect to sell between Oct and the end of March (six months), but it could also just mean the first year. No way to know for sure without confirming with them. Even doubling that number sounds low to me though (unless they anticipated not being able to sell that many through the end of March due to supply issues).

Edit: Roland’s fiscal year looks to end in December. Maybe that’s all they expected to sell by the end of December? Who knows? I give up. Haha.

Shipping date keeps getting updated, 3 to 4 weeks now on Thomann Germany, gives me hope but we’ll see

My date hasn’t moved at all since I ordered from Anderton’s. Still 15th December. No idea if I got in the first batch or not. Anyone else here ordered from Anderton’s (UK) with an earlier or later date?

Edit: or ordered from any shop in the UK with an earlier or later date?

First time posting here (have learned a ton about my new Digitakt from diving into various threads, so thanks everyone for sharing). I ordered an SP404 mk2 on the day it was announced, from GAK in Brighton. I haven’t followed up about timings, but the GAK site is now saying 26 November. Yesterday it said 5 November. Until recently it didn’t show a date at all, so it feels like things are brewing, at least.

I ordered from Music Matter and they said it could be November, depending on the number of units they get in. I’m apparently number ~20 in the list, so who knows :slightly_smiling_face:

Current orders from Guitar Guitar UK are showing a release date of Nov 30th.

My original pre-order delivery estimate with them was 29th October.

Great name sir.

Wish I’d paid the extra 30-40 quid and had the possibility of getting one this month or next rather than February 2022 from dv247!

Haha cheers. I suspect the GAK date will get pushed back too. They told me I was no 1 in the queue there though - so I’ll let you know how I get on.

I’ve got relatives in Brighton. Might pop down and do a break in at GAK :cheeky:

Apparently here in Canada. It was a small run. From what I’ve gathered. Moog Audio which was the first place to ship out told me they got about 40 or so pre orders. They only got 4 units in the first batch so they sent them to first 4 in line. After a few people posted online they got them from Moog Audio. In one day they had 65 new pre-orders so were now at 105 or something. Next batch is expected January 2022.
The biggest music chain store in Canada Long & McQuade got their shipment a few day later. They had around 200 pre-orders over the course of it being available. Only 85 came in the first batch. Next shipment is January 2022.

Some other places that are pretty big stores here like Cosmo are expecting the first shipment in January and have 12 available.

Then you have some independent music stores that get one shipped in. Some not even knowing that it is a sought after item.

Very limited run. And not one place can tell you how many will be in the next shipment. They just know one is coming. So keep those pre-orders so you don’t lose that spot
