Screensaver works pretty well so far for my devices.
Just remember, folks - the Elektron homepage says, and I quote :
“At Elektron, we accept no compromises on quality”
I just left my Octa playing accidentally for about 6 hours. Screen is now trashed with burn-in. Am I supposed to pay for all the screens after warranty ends? Why should I, I when this is a defective design by ANY electronics standards, going back to the dawn of LCD screens.
@shuttle358 do you have the latest update with the screensaver? Anyway contact support regardless.
I owned a Rytm MKII that I bought used. It arrived with some burn in. It faded away after a while and went back to normal. Hopefully that’s the case for your Octa.
Is this still going on? No way to fix it?
Yes, this continues on all Electron instruments equipped with OLED displays. All of them these displays burn out. Not so long ago, I asked the developers to release a firmware that would turn off the display at discrete intervals, which could be set via the menu. (moreover, I did not partially extinguish the display, namely, I turned it off completely) . But the developers did not do this. I’m just desperate. I have 6 pieces of Electron devices, 4 pieces of which I use in the studio via Overbridge and I don’t need AR MK II/A4 MK II displays. I don’t use displays because all the parameters are adjusted via OB. The OLED display of my AR MK II / A4 MK II has already burned out so much that I sometimes even have to peer to distinguish the text against the background of ghosts. I don’t understand the Electron developers why and why they abandoned the excellent proven MK 1 displays and switched to displays from cheap coffee machines and other household appliances! And why, when you are asked to realize an opportunity
turning off the display via the menu, don’t you do it? What motivates you, developers?
From what I’ve read and seen, I wouldn’t describe the Mk1 screens as excellent. Far from it.
I would really like to get an Analog 4 Mk2, but this OLED thing is a big issue.
The MK1 display is excellent compared to OLED displays! That’s exactly what I wanted to say. OLED displays of the current generation are EVIL!
I have already replaced 4 displays in my A4 MK II / AR MK II due to the fact that they burned out, but I have not replaced any in my A4 / MK1 - they have been working perfectly since 2014!!! They read perfectly and nothing happened to them ! This is what I call time-tested technologies! But Electron decided to ruin an excellent trademark. And that’s what they do perfectly well! Forward - Electron ! I’ve already got rid of my two MK II’s after I replaced the OLED displays there. Now I’m selling the remaining 2 pieces with a large forced discount due to the fact that the displays look like garbage! And I won 't buy anything else on OLED ! Neither Electron nor anyone else!
I have a huge OLED tv which has certainly spent countless more hours on than any music device I’ve ever used (I wish I had that sort of commitment lol) and it’s got no issues at all. Is it a huge deal to pop it open and change the screen? not sure how trivial that is but surely a little 1 inch screen would cost very little and it might be as simple as a little plug and play thing. To be honest occasional replacement seems worth it to me for the any-angle viewing
Well, watch your big OLED TV next. Here they discuss the specific problem of specific devices with monochrome OLED displays of filthy quality from Elektron, leading to the fact that the text is poorly readable against the background of burnt-out ghost characters and getting worse over time very much!
All screens are susceptible to burn in. From CRT to LCD. From plasma to OLED. There’s no magic technology that avoids that. In most cases LCD and plasma burn in isn’t permanent, but that’s of little comfort if you’re using something frequently enough to acquire burn in in the first place.
That being said, there are many reasons to prefer OLED to these other technologies. In viewing angle, clarity, sharpness, quickness, and visibility across different ambient lighting conditions (and darkness), OLED objectively outperforms the old LCD screens.
And it’s not like the MkI screens are without issue. There are plenty of threads here about them fading, losing contrast. or just dying. Nor is this limited to Elektron (on either the LCD or OLED side). Screens are the first thing to go on most electronic appliances (just spend some time browsing photos on Reverb). There’s a reason there are so many suppliers of after-market screens.
So is it still going on? Yes. To all screens, everywhere.
No way to fix it? On one hand, not really. All screens will eventually degrade or die. Using the screen saver (in everything from your laptop to your Elektron) will help prolong the screen’s life.
But on the other hand, yes. It’s very fixable. Screens are serviceable parts and there are bunches of after-market replacements and official Elektron service options. So if your screen dies, you replace it, and then it’s fixed.
I’m usually the first to criticise if it’s warranted but my experience in the past with these screens never had this issue. sucks that you’re having this issue but I really like the oled screens and wouldn’t change it, old elektron screens really aren’t great. Have you looked into replacing it yourself?
All the screens are dying
(all the screens are dying)
Yellow white OLED
(doesn’t matter then)
Gotta buy new screens
(go get some new screens)
To replace the dead
(to replace the dead)
There’s no way to save them
(no no way to save them)
Burn-In is their fate
(they were born to burn)
Californian Screening
(californian screening)
Be ready to replace
Beauty fades away
And all the screens must die
I was told they’re built to last
(Yes, they’re built to last)
But they will burn inside
(yes, they burn inside)
You know, they seem to burn so fast
(Ain’t they burning fast?)
Still they’re the best today
(they’re the best today)
All the screens are dying
(everywhere they dying)
It happens every day
All the screens are dying
It happens every day
ps i got mine replaced around when i posted this. took a bit over a month from what i remember.
The mkI displays also burn in/discolor/fade out.
That’s not so. Both my A4 MK1 + ARM 1 have been working since 2014. And only the display from AR dimmed. But it reads great. And the physics of the process is different there. The OLED display has a pronounced burnout of pixels that stay in the same place for a long time. As a result, burned-out ghosts are formed, which are overlaid with new ones and they also burn out. And so on endlessly. As a result, the OLED image becomes poorly readable after 6-7 months of active use.
TF displays simply change their brightness, while they have no problems burning out individual pixels and layering ghostly icons. The A4 MK1 + MK1 TF display is perfectly readable even after 10 years. They just become a little less bright.
Just compare 6-7 months for OLED and 10 years for TF!
So there is no need to mix two completely different problems in one pile.
