I agree generally but (for me) the problem with Squarp’s philosophy about Sequence Mode or Song Mode on Hapax is they are 95% committed to the latter philosophy when Patterns/Tracks already exist for users who want to “play the patterns” on the fly. There really isn’t an equivalent workflow on the other side for those of us who just want to arrange a full song first and then adjust how we might loop/latch/mute various parts of the track in a live setting
Thanks for the detailed breakdown! I currently use a Digitone for most of my sequencing and also the M8 Tracker. I enjoy both for their different styles of sequencing and will admit that I feel like the M8 Tracker helps me get more granular with arrangement / transitions / etc… The Digitone with song mode is essentially just rows of patterns with different mute states and I’m totally okay with that. Digitone feels more like performing a song, M8 feels like composing. It sounds like the Pyramid might be more similar to the Digitone in operation, but with more of a piano roll feel.
My brain must be wired squarp because I’m not even exactly sure what the complaint is.
Hey !
Is it possible on the Pyramid to modulate the FX parameters with LFOs ?
If not internal, could it be done with midi loopback ?
It’s not possible internally, you can see here the LFO destinations : Pyramid Manual | Squarp instruments
And the Pyramid has a very poor midi implementation, you can see the chart here : https://squarp.net/static/PYRAMiDi-7094a08cfe1165baf6db2b8207409fbe.pdf
So even with Midi Loopback, it doesn’t seem to be possible.
Thank you for the quick answer
Hmmm, such a shame, I was wondering if the pyramid could handle random and modulated bpm and I guess it cannot
Yeah it sucks but you can still automate the BPM manually with the BPM effect.
(Hapax has extensive MIDI FX modulation via the LFOs fwiw. but no automation to BPM, yet, ironically)
Yes I saw the bpm FX, that’s why I was wondering it if could be modulating… So close to be awesome !
When I checked Hapax spec, I was disappointed to see that it was so powerful but with en evident lack of features/interests of developpers in managing timing and tempo with creative ways.
The Torso T1, Polyend Tracker and M8 Tracker are the only hardware seq I know for the moment that can achieve theses kind of creative stuff with tempo/timing (with random).
The Oxi One with the 4.0 firmware still in beta allows to do that also, it has a quite extensive Midi Mapping feature.
Since you can modulate the bpm with an external controller, I guess you could also do that with Midi Loopback, I haven’t tried yet.
The Oxi One is a pretty amazing sequencer, I actually sold my Pyramid to fund it, no regrets.
just in case if you have iPad/iPhone – todays update of Drambo allows to achieve that with its new MIDI sequencer module.
Pyramid news from Squarp:
From the very beginning, our mission has been to craft musical electronic instruments that inspire creativity. We embarked on this journey 10 years ago with our first product, the Pyramid sequencer, and its success far exceeded our initial expectations.
Your trust allowed us to expand and reach new horizons. We’ve been able to bring on board some new exceptional talent. Our team has grown and stayed unwaveringly united, maybe because we are driven by the same values: designing modern instruments we really want to use to make music, crafting professional yet fun interfaces, providing a close customer support, delivering high-quality machines, and of course organizing the most pleasant working environment possible.
During this journey, we’ve always striven to handle every aspect of the job by ourselves to reinforce our team’s skills and knowledge. This is why we’ve kept a variety of tasks in-house, such as software engineering, industrial design, electronics design, production management, final assembly, quality control, orders and shipping, web development, graphic design, user guides writing, customer support, company administration … and now, we are even doing realistic 3D renders of our products images and videos!
Over the past few years, Pyramid has grown more and more difficult to manufacture in an economically viable way, mostly due to the ongoing global chip shortage and other supply-chain issues. After careful consideration, we have decided to discontinue Pyramid, and shift focus to the rest of our product-line.
We understand that many of you still cherish and use this instrument as a part of your musical expression. While we will no longer be able to provide official support or updates for this product, we want you to know that your trust, your feedback, your musical creativity will remain forever in our hearts. With this experience, our company is more mature than ever. Thanks to you, we can continue to seek out the most enjoyable, inspiring, and musical machines possible.
In the spirit of celebration, we are offering a special discount of 15% on Pyramid’s little brother, the Hapax sequencer. The code is PYRAMID10YEARS and will be valid until December 1, 2023 (only on our official shop store.squarp.net).
Last but not least: we’re happy to announce the release of the ultimate version of Pyramid’s firmware, pyraOS 4.03! This version fixes some issues recently reported, and will ensure an even brighter future to your beloved machine.
Sad news. I understand how, in a hardware manufacturing company, there’s probably not enough room for both the Pyramid and the Hapax. But in a sea of hardware sequencers (including Squarp’s other offerings), the Pyramid stood on its own, offering a unique feature set and experience. It’ll be missed.
Pyramid Love!
Dang it
Was just about to buy one, and still might, if I can figure out if it will do the linear sequencing of things a la a Roland MC-80 without a ton of mental effort, and let the polyend tracker do the pattern/loopy kind of things.
Reading this thread makes that clear, and then not clear, lol.
Meaning, I want select whatever mode and measure length, and hit record, and then play it back. Full stop.
Pyramid is one of the best sequencers on the market. With its own issues but still the best.
That’s sad Squarp have decided to go with Hapax instead.
This track was sequenced by Pyramid exclusively, mix of hardware and software.
And this one. Multiple euclidean tracks were configured with different notes and probabilities, and send notes to the same bells digitone track to create this beautiful randomness on the background.
As someone who learned hardware sequencing on an MC-50 . . . neither Pyramid nor Hapax (alas) really do linear sequencing in that way. which is a shame because they are so solid in all other respects. ultimately i switched to the Deluge for its linear Arranger mode and making full tracks that way is an absolute breeze.
I love my pyramid
Been the centrepiece of my studio for ten years !! (purchased from first bath released)
Accelerometer Pyramids for the win!
