Looking for basic live looping with a predetermined number of bars…recording a clip with immediate playback, synced to midi clock, overdub etc. Id like be able to loop my electric bass and other instruments in sync with my DT/DN, essentially.
would it be possible (and relatively simple/easy) to use the Tangerine with a faderbank?
I want to both use it to play a backing track, as well as have multiple long samples always running, and use the faderbank like a radio board, dub style, with the faders controlling the individual volumes.
Would a 16n be overkill/would I only be able to do this with 8 pieces at once? (and thus should just get a faderbank with 8 sliders?)
thank you for your insight, I’m super not well-versed with almost any semi-modern equipment! but trying to get away from using extremely rudimentary methods of achieving the above live, such as using multiple physical 4 track tape machines, etc.
Hi, yes it’s definitely possible and not too complicated to achieve a setup like that. I don’t own the tangerine but I’m planning on buying one to use it very similarly to how you’re describing it. I read the manual yesterday…you can assign a midi controller to things like volume, pan, reverb and delay sends, filter cutoff and resonance, and a few other parameters- per pad.
I’ve done something similar with the Novation Launch Control XL, rather than the 16n. Works like a charm. I also mapped the two sets of send knobs on each channel of the XL to the Delay and Reverb sends on the Tangerine, the pan knobs to control the filters, and the track control buttons to control play/stop.
Setting it up wasn’t too difficult, but it was a little time consuming and took some trial and error. It should be noted that the XL requires a MIDI host. I used a Retrokits RK-006, which meant that my little setup remained entirely USB powered.
I don’t know if I’d recommend the XL over something like the 16n which also has minijack MIDI. But if you happen to have another MIDI host already, then it’s a pretty nifty solution.
I would be compiling this setup from scratch. I literally do this live with multiple huge 4 track cassette recorders, digital field recorders, etc. I use the digital recorders for when I need perfect playback of backing tracks, and the cassette machines where I need more long form field recording type playback coming in and out.
If I can replace all of that bullshit with a tiny tangerine and either a sleek 16n or one of THESE
…well that sounds pretty magical. Also having the control be a nice sleek row of faders is the primary cherry on top of the way I like to do it.
to reiterate a part of my initial query however, would the 16n be redundant, because I could only be using 8 of the sliders at a given time? If so I’ll go for the 8 fader bank…
yes, I’m still open to going with the blackbox, but for the simple use that I need, it seems the smaller tangerine is probably more than enough. I don’t need usb host port (not even really sure of what this is), and one stereo output is totally fine with me.
Though if the blackbox can be controlled live with a 16 faderbank and the tangerine only an 8 faderbank, that could be worth considering.
As suggested by Stone262 the BB is a great option and recently got an update so that the multisample functionality is similar (or the same?) as the Tangerine. USB Host port works with a Launch Control XL (but you must use the USB power brick that comes with the BB and put the LCXL into low power mode). To use the midi controller you linked by the Midi Maker you’d need a USB host for the Tangerine, 16n will work with TRS midi. BB has both options.
That’s fair enough. Sorry I was a bit vague with the host port because I was typing in a rush.
As Icecold said, it simply lets the Blackbox host a usb midi controller directly. Just have to do some checking as some will try and draw more power than the Blackbox can supply.
Either BB or Tangerine both sounds like it will be a lot of fun, and I’m sure you’ll find some other parameters to assign the 8 spare faders to.
haha no prob, im sure im in the minority of people who didnt really know what usb host was. I’ve been in the game many years, but am a super late bloomer with tech!
and you’re totally right- I can assign the first 8 sliders to volume per original plan, and the other 8 to filter or something like that. 8 individual playback files should be fine for a given piece, then I can just make a new project for another 8, etc.
I would be surprised if the tangerine doesn’t have an update soon enough - there are a few fundamental features needed (audio preview sample browsing the card being my main one)
It does sound very good, a little better than the BB - which may or may not matter to you as BB already sounds good.
An example of what? Things that have caused me to not have a lot of confidence in the developers ability to update the boxes in a timely fashion?
Too many to list, really. You’d be better off probably just going to the 1010 forums, you’ll see plenty of examples of people desperately bumping feature request threads where the 1010 people have said “yes this request is on our radar”, which sounds great until you look at the date and realize they said that like 2-3 years ago and still nothing has happened.
I find the general “tone” of their forums odd, too. Like the moderators there are more interested in chastising people for things like forgetting to state their firmware number, or accidentally making a request that has already been made, than they are about actually, you know… having dialogue and solving problems.
