Previously on Elektronauts … This is probably the most discussed topic that’s not about gear. I guess all of the forum‘s wisdom is already collected here:
I used to be able to complete tracks and even full albums a few years ago. However, lately, I’ve found myself frequently unsatisfied with my music. Rather than focusing on a few instruments, I keep changing my setup, which ultimately leads me nowhere.
Having a toddler and a full-time job doesn’t help, but I don’t want to use that as an excuse. Anyway, I am frustrated and unhappy about the whole situation. It seems like I have lost my motivation, although the urge to produce music is still there…
I’ve not made music for years. I’ve not finished a track in like 4. I’ve got a desk sitting beside my work PC with $1000s worth of equipment taunting me every day as I don’t even wanna turn it on and start something.
How do you deal with this? Thinking of selling it all and getting a push3 as I’m an “Ableton user” with too much hardware that uses Ableton more as a multitrack recorder now.
Uhhhhhgggh
I had a free day from work today as I do once a week.
As I was fooling around with my synthesizers and my looper pedal, I started wondering why basically my every musical endeavour ends up as a sketch on my looper’s memory slot. I haven’t recorded anything in a DAW for maybe five years. Whenever I have a little free time, I like to ”jam” on my synths but I never record anything (except on the looper).
That leads to one very real problem. I have a bunch of musical ideas, riffs, melodies, sequen…

Listening to a track too many times can change your perception. You might end up making what feels natural to you, but it might not be what you actually want to listen to.
How do you all deal with this?
I’ve been producing for about 13 years, and it’s always been a struggle. When I was new, I would dive into the piano roll in FL studio, go nuts, and be thrilled with the result and unworried about improving. Quickly I became an anxious producer who would get stuck often. 90% of my tracks are unfinished.
I quit for a while and then impulse bought a digitakt to get back in. It was instantly fun again - unworried about the result, childlike enjoyment. And quickly again I became stuck as my gear an…
Fully admitting my addiction, I’ve taken to hitting the 'Tube daily at 6:30am, listening to interesting music-related interviews while cooking my breakfast and taking my morning walk. Oh, and I take a walk at dusk every day, as well, since I can’t currently afford real therapy
I’ve been on a binge of interviews with the neurotic, opinionated nerdy New Yorker, Mr. Michael Beinhorn, whose production credits include Soundgarden, Korn, Hole, Marilyn Manson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Herbie H…
