Ableton Move : User Thread

I got excited about this bit. Looking forward to this function being added to the Move in the near future hopefully.

  • In Drum Sampler, the Hold parameter in Trigger mode now uses Inf as the maximum value, which plays the sample for its complete length.

I was about to make a sarcastic comment because I don’t really like them. But…I am really trying to be a better person. Are you able to recommend something to me so I can actually not be a dick for once and maybe learn something and introduce me to something new?

in stereo?

Haha I don’t really listen to them at present. Enjoyed them in high school though. For some reason your song reminded me of something like the intro to Papercut by Linkin Park.

why don’t you start one. the thread, that is. the facts to consider: Move, even if you squeezed every drip of potential out of it, is something you use to pass the baton to the next stage. I’d say you can get things to a functioning “Demo” track and send things into production with a healthy blessing.

What would you wish to accomplish with this thread? a producer’s feedback roundtable to identify next steps? a sharable bundle file for collaborators and for reviewing in Note? a seed to stage, published tracks promotion?

People’s craft and tastes will vary. Some things won’t wow you for the simple facts that you don’t like the music–don’t find it inspiring–, or that you are witnessing the raw elements: a raw mix, stand-in presets, bum notes etc. And some will share like a journal entry, not as a polished track. So you might just want to dive in and accept the extent to which your own song craft can take things.

Sry, I haven’t followed the techniques – what’s the best way to chop samples on the Move? I think there’s many technique videos floating around and I’m unsure where to dive in.

I like the “lazy chop,” where you start sampling with one pad, and keep tapping more pads to add extra chops. You can adjust start and end points when done.

Just wanted to hear some tunes people had made on it. I didn’t realise it was such a deep and wild suggestion…

Thanks, will search for videos. Apparently the start point adjustment is precise enough? (Not at my Move, so I’m doing academic research for the moment  )

It’s not Deep or wild fella, feel free to start a thread, worst that can happen is it dies through lack of replies, maybe you can name it something like Ableton move sketches so that folk know it just a place to post current ideas for critique or collaboration… could be fun :+1:

It is. You can zoom into the waveform with the shift button. I use it all the time.

Is Move a good sampler?

I would say: No. At least not yet.

It lacks proper slicing, beat-controlled sampling, multisamples and support for loop points. For me, that’s what makes a good sampler.

For me, yes. instant sampling, and resampling, immediately playable, enough options to mangle the sample, plus lazy chop. enough there to get something good started.

Everything @krunchr said is 100% accurate. On the flip side, Move is a FAST sampler. With Live/Push you need to create an audio track, record a clip, set beat 1.1.1, and Convert the track to a Simpler. With Move, you hit Record and press a pad. With Live/Push, you can get nice tidy chop points and Warp your samples to fit perfectly in time with your project. With Move, you have about a 0.1% chance of getting things to line up perfectly but there are no real consequences if something is messy.

It’s missing a lot of features that other samplers have, but it can also be rewarding to take that stuff out of the equation and just get weird. It all depends on where you want to go!

I think it’s a great sampler. Plus, with Ableton Cloud, you can sample into the Move and grab those samples almost instantly in Live.

Lots of onboard memory for your own samples too.

Precisely. Look at the Syntakt Sound thread. People post silly loops, cool patches, sketches, one-pattern jams, super-polished tracks. It’s one of my favorite threads on the whole forum.

It’s good, but not great. It’s very playable, which is incredible, and it’s extremely easy to sample into and get a rough chop going. It really needs proper slicing and loop points, though.

would you guys who feel like the Move is already good enough for sampling consider sampling a first priority for you or maybe not?.. I’m just curious to how the different opinions might be breaking down, or not?

I guess same Q for the peeps that think it’s lacking a bit?
