Akai S950?

Hi recently plunked for Rytm and loving it so far, still a way to go in terms of using it to its full potential but getting there…slowly, i keep getting lost in sound design and not really learning it fully
here to ask if anyone has any interesting ideas of how to integrate my old S950 into the mix
trying to keep the computer out of the equation just now so ideally looking for a hardware solution…
been thinking a volca sample or MPC 500?
something along those lines that will sit alongside the RYTM
thanks in adv

AFAIK, the Rytm can’t control anything and the Akai S-950 has no on-board sequencer.
An MPC-500 or MPC1000 with JJOS or Octatrack are your best bets.

Elektron made sure that the RYTM wouldn’t integrate well with anything by not implementing the ability to control anything using midi, and making the audio input nearly useless. You have to buy an Octatrack now.

would a Beatstep Pro? do the do?

A Beatstep will work but won’t let you use all the S950 multitimbrality (think the 950 supports 16 instruments). If your happy running two tracks from the Beatstep then sure - an mpc 500/1000 will give you full coverage though.

If you have an iOS device, there are also a number of sequencer apps that might be worth looking into. Fairly decent way to obtain the functionality of computer sequencing with a more hands on approach. The MPC would be better than an OT for utilizing the multitimbrality of the S950, but my own experience with an MPC1000 left me with the feeling that I was fighting against a decade old specialized computer and I sold it off, despite really loving a lot of the features.

If you have an iPad, try ModStep. It is a flexible step sequencer with a certain “hardwary” feel that has a built-in sampler instrument.

thanks will check out the IOS options
hadn’t thought of that tbh
seems like the Trigger Finger Pro could also be an option as it has a dedicated onboard sequencer and can work independent of a computer with the psu option
might be better off with a secondhand MPC500 though…
have heard midi output from RYTM is likely never to happen?

I have a Trigger Finger Pro for sale (hint hint)

You can power it with USB or with most configurable wall warts (power consumption is not much).

How’s the CC implementation on the s950? If you can control sample start / endpoints with CC, I’d imagine the OT to be a blast.

One option also that hasn’t been mentioned - korg electribe. Most of them work fine as midi sequencers, and they can be bought secondhand for peanuts.

Correct; never. Also, the audio input will forever remain nearly useless.

Well, there’s the audio-to-midi box option for the indiouts. Would like to try it but them boxes seem to be out of stock quite often (forgot the name)

A cheaper and newer option would be the new Akai MPD series (226 or 232). That will give you all the control you need over the S950 if you just need sequencing and midi cc. Only limitation I see versus an MPC 500 is pattern length may be 32steps Max? Maybe you can chain them though. Worth checking out as they are universally useful midi controllers/sequencers and around half the price of the 500.

Also Faderfox SC4 is worth checking out for sequencing multiple tracks - nice small footprint too.

MPD’s look good as does the Beatstep pro
still think there maybe be a funky old school (read cheap) alternative
on offer by way of drum machine
interested as to why people think the audio in is broken too?
i unplugged the audio in while it was running and the whole unit froze and audio in didn’t work again until a power down cycle…
