“The guys had been hesitant to meet at their studio because they don’t use any hardware gear — they make everything on their computers — and they’re reluctant to demystify their production process, which they say is “kind of a secret.” They do tell me that they have created chains of software that they can feed different cues into and have it come out sounding like Amnesia Scanner. “It’s not like we have this Moog synth or classic drum machine, all the elements we use are more like instruments that we’ve created ourselves,” explains Ville.”
Anyone wanna speculate? I love their sound design. Not trying to bite anybody’s shit I’m just curious. I find learning about other artists’ processes can inspire new ideas.
Don´t take it personal, please. It is a good question, but nowadays a lot of newcomer artists try to generate attention by mystifying their production workflow or try to give themselve some kind of mysterious glamour by keeping it as a secret.
I think that is hilarious.
and here i was thinking a lot of the sounds on the album were reamped. … though i guess an amp simulator now.
of coarse anything is possible.
probably Max or Reaktor… probably a daw. for tracking and mixing.
but who knows. could be Soundcollider.
Belief Defect mentioned sorta the same. but they were more straight forward with. custom reaktor stuff controlled Via Machine.
Being secretive about tools/process/identity has been done for many years.
Aphex , drexciya member identities , banksy’s identity , burial , members of opus 3 (90’s act with a few hits) , sold very old painters were quite secretive about their methods (i saw a documentary ages ago , cant remember their name , but it was produced by Penn Gillette from penn and teller )
Some people like that stuff , buy into the mystique , i probably did many years ago when aphex / boards of canada was new but I’m now old and cynical.
Their music isn’t the type I listen to but the article worked as i’d never heard of them , unlikely to dig them out in the future but if they find success then good luck to them.
Well, I like it when artists are playfully secretive about their processes they’ve every right to be after all! And a little bit of mystery can do wonders for creativity and imagination, not to mention attention.
To be fair, I also like it when artists are completely open about their processes, because I love reading about that stuff.
Perhaps I’m just an insufferable optimist who loves artists making and talking about art!
Me too, I like both approaches but I can respect when someone would rather talk about processes/ideas/approach than equipment. People get too hung up on the gear sometimes.
This. Just about every Roland thread (or Roland clone thread) ends up turning into shit these days.
Kind of reminds me of the old Nintendo Vs Sega playground wars that happened at school back in the 90s when I was a kid only involving over oppinionated grown men and their favourite music toys instead.
Interesting. Listening to the album right now. Reminds me of Oneohtrix Point Never, sort of. I’m going to bet custom Reaktor or Max4Live like most people have already guessed.
I understood the above quote as less about secret software tools and more about them just being kind of embarrassed they didn’t have a cool pile of hardware to show off in photos, as people often do in interviews. Lots of artists use custom software, but they usually just say it was made with max or whatever, not a “secret”. But, always give an artist the benefit of the doubt in interviews like this - things get lost in translation, misquoted, etc.
