Analog Rytm OS Upgrade

Hello, thanks in advance for any help I get on here.

I purchased an Analog Rytm MkII used on Reverb and my current OS is Catalina 10.15.7. I’m using a USB 2.0 cable through an Apple adapter to hook it up to my computer and I’m able to get Ableton to read the device. However, I’m not able to get Overbridge to read the device. I downloaded Transfer and got the firmware update but when I sent it to the machine I got an error message “Upgrade Failed Checksum Error.” The second time I tried it, the machine got stuck on a screen saying OS Upgrade Receiving with a loading bar stuck at 50%.

I’m looking to upgrade the firmware to see if that’s the reason why I’m unable to use Overbridge with the device. Any information is helpful as I’m new to Elektron devices.

Thank you!

Hey, welcome RA96!

Hope you’ll enjoy your ARMK2 once everything is sorted out.

Overbridge 2.5.4 supports Analog Rytm 1.61E.
When you turn on the Analog Rytm the version should appear on the screen (I have a mk1 and it’s on the bottom right side).

Is the OS 1.61E?

  • if yes, it means it should work but you need to enable Overbridge in the Analog rytm’s SYSTEM > USB CONFIG. Check Overbridge.

if it’s already checked, the problem might be on the software side.
Do you have the Overbridge engine running? (an icon should appear in the status bar and display your Analog Rytm as being idle) . If not, restart your Mac. if after a restart, it still does not appear, I would recommend to uninstall Overbridge (there’s an uninstaller when you download Overbridge) and do it all over again. Turning on/off your Analog Rytm a few times could help too (restarting your mac too).

  • if no, you need to update your Analog Rytm but it seems you’re failing at that. This could be the cable, the adapter (but if AR appears in Ableton, it seems they are fine), the AR USB side (half broken? does it stay stable in Ableton or does the AR disconnect?) or the software: Which version of Transfer are you using? Which version of the firmware are you trying to use? What is the process you use to update the firmware (software setup and AR setup)?

The OS is 1.60A! What should I do?

Could you answer these questions? (can’t promise I’ll be able to help but without any answers I certainly won’t be able to help more than that).

Ah, I don’t think the cable is the issue, it’s stable in Ableton.

This is the version of Transfer: Elektron_Transfer_1.6.7.
This is the firmware version: Analog-Rytm_MKII_OS1.61E

I followed the instructions in Transfer in the SYSEX TRANSFER page.

OK, here is how I’ve updated my mk1 (I’m also on Catalina):

  1. connect the AR via USB
  2. Launch Transfer
  3. Midi IN/OUT select AR then click Connect
  4. On the AR SYSTEM > OS UPGRADE (it displays “os upgrade waiting for sysex”)
  5. drag & drop the firmware file on the Transfer window
  6. the upgrade process begins

Could you try this way? if it does not work, turn off your AR, wait 20-30 seconds, turn on your AR again and try again.

if it doesn’t work you could try with the SySex Librarian app instead of Transfer.

not sure why you’re getting a checksum error on the firmware but FYI OB 2.5.4 is not going to work on Catalina, maybe try older version of OB:

From 1 September 2023, following the deprecation of our old driver, it will no longer be possible to install Overbridge on a computer running macOS Catalina 10.15 (or lower). You can still run your currently installed version of Overbridge on Catalina, but you will not be able to update it.

there were several updates from 1.60A as well, I’m not sure if it’s possible to download individual updates but maybe try contacting support and get all the updates individually and then update incrementally, like 1.60A > 1.61 > 1.61E

it works fine here. I’m puzzled by the “From 1 September 2023, following the deprecation of our old driver” though… but it certainly means that you won’t be able to install 2.5.5 on Catalina : “You can still run your currently installed version of Overbridge on Catalina, but you will not be able to update it.”

not sure what’s the difference as well but that’s what they say:

btw, any specific reason not to update Catalina forward? I mean, 32 bit is already unsupported, why not move to Big Sur or even further?

I could try to uninstall and install it again to see if it works as usual (I updated Overbridge just before September but that would be weird that the same version can’t work now in September!).

they keep on adding restrictions in their new OS and installing things just get annoying. I’ve looked into the supposed new features of Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura and there’s nothing I’m interested really. I hate losing hours updating my Mac for no real benefits (most of the time, it gets slower…) while hoping that my plugins and soft will still work. I have old Logic sessions that I like to be able to open so a 5 years update cycle is about right for me.

don’t uninstall

haha, yeah but that’s fine I’m not really using Overbridge these days so if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work!

Dafuq? Well, that saves me from buying a Syntakt then. Can’t afford a new computer as well :joy:

edit: I’ll add a bit of nuance there because it looks I can still use OB in its current state, with Syntakt 1.20. It’s still a bit of a bummer though.

I guess there’s a subject for us here

anyway, @RA96 hope you’ll be able to update your AR!

It’s their own fault for making hardware that still runs great after a decade plus. If it runs fine why should I upgrade :stuck_out_tongue:

This worked! Thank you!

Improved latency sounds good… However I really don’t want to deal with upgrading the OS on my Mac right now:( Did anybody managed to install 2.5.4 on Catalina?

Maybe you can do it on a friend’s computer that supports the upgrade?

Not really. The thing is you have to uninstall OB before installing the latest version🤔 I don’t want to be in the situation where I’m forced to upgrade MacOS. Did any valiant knight had the courage to try this??

Hi there. Mac Studio running Ventura 13.2.1. AR MKI with OS 1.61E installed. Transfer Version 1.8.10. AR responding perfectly with Overbridge in Logic Pro. I downloaded the latest OS 1.70 sys file. Overbridge ticked in AR System settings. Following all the steps I can see I’m still getting “Upgrade Failed Checksum Error” on device and “Incompatible OS” failure message in Transfer software. Any help appreciated ; )
