Any Mic suggestions that can be wired straight to OT

As the title says I’m looking to put a mic directly through the input of the Octatrack, I didn’t know if something like the ‘cloud’ pre-amp could work without phantom power and amp a dynamic mic. But I didn’t know if there may be a better solution or type of mic that would fit the task, any help is a huge thanks!

I tried a cheap Beta 57 chinese copy (mid-low output dynamic mike) straight into an input (XLR to jack TRS cable) and I get incoming signal. Could not really test the quality yet, though.

Depends on what you intend to mike (voice, beatbox, intrument, …) it may or may not fit your needs. But the gain of the OT mk2 amplifier is enough for this basic mic.

Yeah any dynamic mic does the trick. I use SM57 and 58 direct in, xlr to trs. I get all levels max and then use the compressor if i want more volume (more noise there too but that doesnt bother me).

Thanks for the tips. I tried it a while back and didn’t like having to jack up the gain internally afterward as much as I did. May just have to go through a mixer but was wanting a portable solution.

What about a small field recorder like the Zoom H5? It can output/monitor at line level, has interchangeable mic capsules, and can help you gather Octafood from the world at large. You could even attach other mics to it and use the line level output to feed into your OT.

OOH! Thanks! Great idea, ‘Chris Farley SNL’- You remember that part where talked about collecting octafood? That was Awesome!

I use a zoom h2n hooked Up directly to the OT via the line out. Works great.

Here’s proof.

Whoa!!! What kind of bird is that?! My partner loves birds and she’s got me into them now too!

That there is a Salmon Faverolle Chicken. She likes to hang out with the humans every once in a while.

I use whatever mic I want and connect it thru a TC perform VE which brings it up to line level. Can also do all sorts of fun effects like vocoder, autotune, reverb…

Like others I use a H1n as a mic for both OT and MPC. Works quite well and small. Also great to then record the performance form OT/MPC.

Teenage Engineering OP-Z can be used as a mic, does not sound too bad at all, reasonable frequency range, but only if you already have one, would not recommend buying it just for that purpose of course.

I really appreciate everyone’s input. I think the Zoom looks like a winner for me. I have a different model so I’ll check if it has a Line Out.

I use my op-1 mic this way. If I want to quickly get some acoustic guitar into the OT, I just run the op-1 into it and use it’s built-in mic.
It’s not audiophile quality but it has character. And yes, op-z mic sounds surprisingly good, especially as a drum room mic.

Sweet! I doubt I’d ever get one but good to know for sure.

Not sure this world needs more autotune
