I’ve gotten some comments over the years where people comment, calling me a producer. And personally I find myself far attached from being a producer. For the simple reason that I don’t feel I have the technical prowess a producer should have. I don’t think about my “music” in terms of producing but rather as a form of expression. Therefore I attest myself as an artist.
I think it’s interesting because with synths and the whole bedroom producing thing, it seems like the lines are a bit blurred between artist and producer.
What do you consider yourself to be? And does other people recognize that about you?
Im certainly not a producer. Like you i lack the skills and knowhow. But i do Produce stuff. I also create stuff so that makes me an artist? Confusing isn’t it? Identity crisis is a bummer.
I believe you don’t have to chose, and can be both (and more) in one-man electronic music projects, like most electronic musicians.
Grooveboxes are instruments as much as a violin. They are not strictly producing tools.
We all know how much practice, brain and work is required to operate those.
I propose that the word/title “producer” is a hack used by artists to get a company to pay them more, and/or to change up their art practice so they’re harnessing the creativity of “artists” to help realise their vision.
For what it’s worth, which is little to nothing, I have a major allergy to the word “artist.” Perhaps it’s just my professional industry but the word seems synonymous with “brat.” Someone who only wants green m&ms backstage. Or demands other special treatment beyond what is reasonable for the masses.
I dunno, I call myself whatever best fits the environment. Technical brain-people tend to like “producer” more, other times people respond better to “artist”.
"“The best artists are people who don’t consider themselves artists, and the people who do are usually the most pretentious and annoying. They’ve got their priorities wrong. They’re just doing it to be artists rather than because they want to do it.”
…recording and performing artist…
…producing recordings for urself and / or others…
…writing songs and / or creating tracks…
while u’ll never stop learning and gaining knowledge…
inspiration and sonic know how always go hand in hand on a neverending and winding road of life…
and in best case u’r able to make a living from ALL that…
I don’t know, i know nothing about producing nor do I feel like an artist. I guess I’m an amateur artist and an amateur musician, but definitely not even an amateur producer.
I guess I see myself as a mixture of musician and producer. I prefer the creating/writing/playing part by far. The production thing I do just out of necessity.
Artist is such a wide term, that I don’t really like it.
One thing is certain. I’m no expert in any of these things, I just try having fun and enjoying the results
If you produce music then by definition you are a producer, but a producer does not necessarily need to be the composer. An artist is one who creates, so also in that sense a producer is an artist.
