you know it, man
Ended up cancelling my order for now. Iām still feeling a bit of buyers remorse from the K2 I got at the end of last year and pretty much never use, so I think Iāll just stick with the Grandmother/Take 5 combo for now, and revisit this one when they are more readily available and more opinions are in.
The guy behind these cool videos response to me in the comments seems to indicate he greatly prefers his Rev2. His videos sound really nice though!
Iām also still in two minds about it - Iāve put in a return notice to Thomann and will spend the weekend making up my mind.
I have a Toraiz AS-1, which is effectively one voice of the Prophet 6ā¦it sounds amazing, but due to the UI, itās a pain for me to create my own patches. Itās currently the only synth I own with that DSI character. I thought maybe the Behringer Pro-800 could give me that character in polyphonic and knob per function without breaking the bank, and it does, itās just the build quality that makes it less joyous to use for me than it should be. Iām sort of relieved you know what Iām talking about (your K2 experience), I do want to love it and really, the sound is fantastic for that price - but I alos have VSTs that sound amazing, the point of hardware for me is partially the tactile experience also. Here at least my unit feels like a (cheap) toyā¦in fact the Sonicware Texture Lab I bought last month feels better than my Pro-800 to me currently, and that thing is designed to LOOK & FEEL like a toy lol.
Also people report stepping of controls on some units on Gearspace, so it seems like Iām not the only one who has/notices this bit.
EDIT: because you mentioned it, if I return this, Iāll just get a Rev2. Been eyeing one for years but somehow never got around to buy oneā¦letās see
Check the Take 5 as well. Go listen to the Jexus patches on YouTube.
by this logic you should sell the Toraiz AS-1. It sounds like a pain to create patches! I donāt see the Pro 800 toy-like looks at all tbh. my Model D did not feel toy like compared to some of the Roland kits Iāve owned. whilst Rev 2 is a nice keyboard, itās a bit of a marmite synth in terms of sound, particularly the filter. I would say the Pro 800 is prob the best alternative to a P5 module and I donāt think look wise itās that different. if anything its a bit more compact. Iāve also always had technical issues Sequential gear (filter knobs breaking, buttons not pressing), prob just had bad luck - but happened to both my Prophet 6 and OB6. I had zero issues with my Model D. Maybe the Pro 800 feels different, but I must say Behringer synths are not bad quality in my experience.
Yeah the Toraiz AS-1 was/is on the āto sellā list for that reason, though the sound has me procrastinating the sale. Same with the Pro-800. As I said, sound is fantastic. Build quality and feel for me not so much. No problem, Iām still deciding. I see its benefits, I just donāt feel that it being cheap is argument enough to ignore these other elements that are not directly related to the sound but affect the experience. As Iāve mentioned repeatedly, it could also just be my unit. My wife tried out the filter cutoff on my Vermona Mono Lancet today, then tried the same on the Pro-800 - her comment āoh this one responds much less reliably.ā Sheās got little to do with synths but is a musician, so on the unit I have itās noticable.
People suggested here and on gearspace (to others not me) to use NPRN to control the synth with more accuracy. Cool, I can see how that workaround solves the issues I point out, but thatās not attractive to me.
Iām glad to read that youāre loving your Behringer synths, Iām not there yet, maybe Iāll get there. Sound is awesome, so that I am appreciating already, regardless of the value-for-money here.
Back for some more reporting - and hopefully some input from other users:
updated the Pro-800 to the latest firmwareā¦
ā¦Hanging midi notes still a problem, though less common
ā¦the new Envelope modes make the synth a lot more flexible, Fast Linear & Fast Exponential sound very different to Slow Linear / Slow Exponential. However, the envelope is now quite buggy! I havenāt worked out what leads to it bugging out yet, but Iāve had eg Decay affect Release affect Sustain and sustain doing nothingā¦then Iāve had it where increasing the attack would also increase release. Iāve also had the envelope not respond at all or turn from Fast Exponential to Slow Linear when switching waveforms.
ā¦Waveform switches are also buggy. Iāve had a Saw come on when flipping up the Triangle switch, and the Pulse wave come through when all switches are set to off (primarily on OSC1).
ā¦when saving a preset, the envelope setting jumps back to Slow Linearā¦maybe thatās planned/desired behaviour, no way to know without proper documentation.
Anyone else experiencing such bugs? Iāve spent some 4 hours with the synth today, soundwise itās a nice addition to my rangeā¦it sounds distinctively different to all my other synthsā¦would love to hear if other users experience similar issues, Iām still contemplating sending it back.
So I went ahead and made a few recordings to enable a (loose) comparison between the sound/character of the Pro-800 and Nymphes.
OSC1 on both is set to Pulse wave, then the snippets go through different settings (each file is named after what happens in the clip). The arpeggio is just a simple Cmin chord. I did not match volume, both are set to max volume and routed into a Mackie 1642 VLZ4 with a touch of reverb on both via the Meris Mercury 7 (Cathedra algo). The Nymphes comes in much hotterā¦I guess thatās a feature then, lol.
Youāre doing Gods work, brother. Thanks for taking the time to upload and make the comparison. Itās very, very much appreciated.
Midi loop maybe ? I dont have any problem with mine and it is certainly less buggy than my Waldorf M.
Video is sound only from 2:45 on.
He had to add a little extra stuff to get this to work, but doable. Behringer is featuring this video on their FB so maybe they could add a feature too. If not itās doable anyways.
At this price it seems a few people will do the same thing as well.
Do all videos for this synth sound good ?
Got mine yesterday. First impression is good. Need some time to get around the menu system, but the sound is very nice. It is a pretty ābasicā synth, so pretty fast to get something going.
I like that it has two sequencer tracks that can play at the same time. But didnt understand how to insert rests and stuff like that.
Anybody know the differences between the P-600 gligli and this? I looked in a manual for the Gligli mod, and think there where more options than here.
That guy is smart. Hmm Iāve got a Midihub, and a Yolo attitudeā¦
It does sound pretty damn good.
I mean really good.
My Pro 800 arrived yesterday (several days early which was handy) but I didnāt get long to play with it. Mine, I suspect like the rest, came with firmware v1.15 and straight away I realised that it was suffering from the hanging notes bug. It seemed as if each time the voices cycled one would hang and then a second voice would hang then the first would release etc etc. Pretty much unplayable so I decided to update via the app. First off I had to update the app on my iPad but the iPad version isnāt the latest version and doesnāt support the Pro800. So I updated the app on my Mac and connected the synth. So far so goodā¦Until I tried the update. I kept hanging up while trying to read the installed OS. I started to think I might have a faulty unit until it dawned on me that the issue could be midi related; I had a din lead plugged in from my T5 which was sending clock or some other midi data which was stopping the USB port from communicating with the app. Unplugged the T5 and it updated straight away. No more hanging notes and faster envelopes.
So the take away is 1) update to the latest OS and 2). Make sure youāre not sending midi over the din port while running the app.
Looking forward to having a more in-depth play later but Iām impressed with the sound so far. Running through the UA Golden and it sounds lovely
Hope all is resolved with your unit! With mine, the update unfortunately didnāt fix the hanging notes issue. It also didnāt resolve the occasional issue of knobs not working/responding for a few rotations. Made videos of these issues and sent them to Thomann, theyāve offered to replace the unit or return it. Iāve got mine all packed up and ready to ship back, Iāve come to the conclusion that this synth is just not for me. Too bad, I was excited for this one, loved the demos of it, but having it IRL and messing with it just didnāt generate the sound & feeling I was looking for from it.
Sorry to hear that. I only had a short play after the update so yeah, there could still be issues? Iām wonderingā¦ have they tweaked the OS since you updated? I forget which is the latest version
Last update was a week ago I think, ver 1.26 if Iām not mistaken. It was supposed to have fixed the hanging notes issue, but for me at least it still happens. I could also have a faulty unit, seem to have more problems with it than others report. Hope youāll enjoy your unit though, the synth can sound very good, no doubt.
Yeah that version sounds familiar. I guess the odd unit gets through sadly.
