Behringer TD-3 MO (Modded Out)

no personal experience… but i have listened to quite a few demos and it sounds “good” to me- you will have to judge for yourself. I actually prefer it to sound a bit diff since everything under the sun been done with a regular 303 already

I’d say buy it more for the interface, and sequencer over the accuracy of the clone

Hi acidhouseforall. After all those years, what do you think of all those clones you have/had? Which ones did you keep? I have a td3 and td3mo at work but they cheaply built and very flimsy, even if the sound is interesting. At home, I have phoscyon 2 which is incredible, but I’m fed up with mouse assisted synths. I was considering a tt303 mk2 (around 180) and xoxbox (probably ladyada).

Not that flimsy I don’t think but yeah certainly very cheaply built and in that respect a very close replica of original

If you have the funds and want a great 303 base which you can extend, I would go with an Avalon. That’s the only instrument I would replace my 303 with once it dies.

If you want something a bit different, look for a circuitbent MB33 or a TB-Valhalla.

To be more precise, I had played the td3 for about 30min and the play/stop button did no longer return to its initial position when I pushed on it. I thought it was broken and didn’t played it for two years and a half. Then, talked to behringer, discovered it was still under waranty. I decided to play it a last time before sending and… the button worked.

Of course I’d like it. But I don’t wand to spend 2000-3000€ to have this perfect but for very restricted use (or 1200€ new but having to wait and pray forever before delivery)

I didn’t know the tb-valhalla! Thank you!

Honestly, I kind of a little regret buying TD3MO. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting, but I have had the machine stored in its original box for a year, waiting to be rescued for future projects. Its workflow is too complicated for me, and in terms of sound I expected it to behave like a TD3 and I didn’t get it.

However, I’m very happy with the original TD3. Together with an RD6 it is always guaranteed fun.

I never sell anything (it’s a very painful story from a long time ago), so my TD3 MO rests in its box. Maybe in the future I can understand it.

I love mine. Its a long way away sound wise from either a 303 or by extension a devilfish probably… but as a synth in is own right it’s a lot of fun once you get the hang of it…

I guess it needs another deep opportunity…

I love mine. But it was very helpful to read the Devilfish manual. That explaines the knob ranges that is most similar to a standard 303. Get in that ballpark, and then adjust to taste. I love it when i push just a little bit outside the regular 303 sound. Can be a bit more “gooey and juciy”. hehe

Thank you. That was my idea. Begin in the ballpark of a 303 and adjust. I’ll read it. Thanks a lot.

Same here, I prefer its playability (1 decay vs 3 !), and for me the most interesting MO mod was fm, mod apparently doable on TD3.

You can loose sweet spots easily with extra filter range, extra resonance. To understand MO mods, I firstly tried to find the default settings and start from something sounding like a regular…TD3. :content: (see video below)
From there I could understand and appreciate the mods, or not.

That’s a bit sad…

I also like the filter tracking. That in combination with Sweep speed slow, and a little longer slide time can make some nice rubbery tones.

I’m actually the opposite haha. Had the TD-3, thought it was too limited (at least let me have a soft envelope) and didn’t feel the distortion. It was way too extreme for my taste, but I think that the MO’s Overdrive and Muffler sounds really, really good.

It’s a little bit complex, but there are some great material on Youtube that helps a lot.

I find the distortion perfect in the TD3. I don’t know why, but I like it a lot.

Same as aortan, I don’t like it. It sounds cold to me and highly prefer the Mo’s overdrive.

I like certain combination of normal/accent decay, filter tracking and slide time. It can make some notes to appear/disappear and put some very nice textures. For now, I’m a bit disappointed by filter fm, which seems to change the sound only at the end of the potentiometer stroke. Maybe I still have to understand what can affect this…

Yeah you’re right !! I’d noticed that but not thought about it, but yeah 3pm to 6pm is where the action is

The control ranges on the MO are pretty bonkers overall, tbh. Super easy to just tweak into silence if you aren’t careful. Part of the charm maybe…

hey, am I the only one who thinks that sequencing that thing from external seq (syntakt or a4 in my case) kills 303 vibe? I don’t know why, but the external seq makes it sound somehow ‘artificial’.
On the other hand original 303 seq feels really natural but its harder to program it and I need to use tracks if I want longer sequences.

Fyi to 303 fans
The Avalon isn’t perfect , mine would often become locked , unable to edit step on / off
And I think pattern/ program change didn’t properly function . Customer support was terrible .

For $2k or whatever they are … there are better synth options.
A td3 , tt303 etc are all good considering you have over $1500 spare to spend on processors / compressors / delay / reverbs etc or spend it on eurorack 303 oscillators/ filter / sequencer modules. ( all of which can be found on google - I don’t have recommendation’s)

Have been playing with the td3-mo for two days now and love its sounds. Need a notepad to keep track of my programming but even that is part of the fun for me.

Already seen returned td3’s for as little as €90, so might pick one of those up as well.
