Do u guys know a clean overdrive pedal just like Peak’s overdrive?
I am not looking for a distortion or drive pedal that changes the whole sound, but only enhancing it.
( I have moog drive, and it’s not what I am looking for… Peak overdrive is the best example of clean overdrive)
Seems like you’re more looking into preamps? But I don’t know the Peak’s overdrive to be fair.
Which overdrive are you talking about specifically? The Peak has a number of drive/distortion stages. The knob in the filter section labelled “Overdrive” controls the pre-filter drive, so if you wanted that sound on another synth you would struggle to achieve it by adding overdrive after the device, at the end of the signal chain.
Yes, that one.
Elektron Analog Drive and Heat both have a Clean Boost mode which sounds similar, though it will be different because like said above it will be added at the end of the chain instead of pre filter
Yeah, the sound will be specific to that filter, even. Different filters respond differently to being overdriven.
In terms of “clean” boost just to add some warmth/thickness the Analog Heat is great at that (and many other things).
“Clean” overdrive pedals are kind of an oxymoron but there are some pedal designs out there that retain a lot of the clean signal mixed in at lower drive settings. I’m thinking of a lightly driven Tube Screamer, a Klon Centaur clone (aka “klone” - there are many on the market) or a Timmy. They often give a subtle boosting/saturating effect, but bear in mind that guitar pedals often have a HPF built in to “clean up” a muddy sound, which might not be what you want for synths or drum machines.
MXR Micro Amp is a classic for this use.
Yeah that is one of the best non-colouring clean boost pedals but a lot of its utility is in driving whatever follows it in the signal chain into overdrive. Not sure it would add much on its own, as it is not an overdrive by itself.
“Clean boost” on the AH definitely introduces more “stuff”/“colour” in and of itself when you drive it.
Yeah, I love that clean boost on the analog heat. It’s a great-sounding box and really good value for all that it does, but it’s not cheap.
One other thought was an exciter. Not as neat as a pedal, but another one to consider. A few of these have been going for €25.
The Mxr pedals I used brought in noise. Is this one different?
I ll try that, thanks!
Is that with clean power, or plugged directly into the wall? It’s a good question. I had an MXR EQ pedal long ago, and it was a noisy guitar chain back then.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a micro amp to test, so I can’t say.
Analog Heat runs great
This is one of the things with AH. When you look at what it does, and what else is out there that does similar stuff, it is clearly great value. If you think of it as a stereo overdrive pedal it looks expensive, but that’s not what it is.
I was thinking also of an ART Tube Mp amp.
For a flexible stereo distortion/drive/warming unit the discontinued Aira Torcido is surprisingly good. I say surprisingly because it’s digital, but it really is good.
Bear in mind that all drive units will raise the noise floor to a greater or lesser extent, it’s inevitable.
…clean overdrive…hmmmm…
all i can say to that direction…the heat does it all for me…99% using it, i “only” use it to get “just” that gentle glue effect of an old analog ssl console masterbus from it…
and that gets closest to what i can think of when it comes to “clean overdrive”…
and this damned two way eq, nothing but hi and lo end increase/decrease option adds or reduces always exactly what i’m missing or wanna get rid of…
not a pedal, though…but reacts to any ordinary pedal controler…or even two…
best of all worlds, if u ask me…
