Hasn’t it already? I’m not using Linux anymore, but even before Proton it was decent, and I’ve only heard good things about Proton.
Its getting in shape yes. With proton and steamdeck making all the games playable we‘re getting there.
I’d like the steam deck GUI and emulation layer on any machine. This seems plausible and even marketable
Gang, is anyone here hip with WiFi routers? I just upgraded my wifi to 1GBs and my current WIFi maxes at 450 over LAN. I want to upgrade so I can take advantage of 0 lag when playing online, but of course don’t want to over due it right now as future proofing tech doesn’t concern me since it will inevitably be cheaper in the future. Any recommendations? Not looking to spend more that $150.
I am really enjoying Hogwarts Legacy and if you are a Harry Potter fan, definitely worth playing!
I just replaced my old Google Mesh with the Amazon / Eero 6+ mesh.
I had really awful ping times and significant packet drop (likely related) with the Google mesh. Eero 6+ has been trouble free.
A minor annoyance is that the Eero 6+ app nags me to sign up for the plus cloud service. Glass half full is that they definitely want me to pay for the service, so it’s unlikely that they are monitoring my traffic in any way. (and monitoring customer comms is anathema to AWS, and the guy who created AWS now runs all of Amazon)
Edit: I live in a large unit in a concrete high-rise tower, and the 2.4 GHz and 5.9 GHz spectrum is saturated. If the Eero 6+ works here, it should work just about everywhere.
I wired my house in a sneaky/weird out of sight retrofit sort of way with copper and fiber and have switches on each floor supplying connections. All game equipment is ethernet. Can’t stand wifi for anything that’s not a mobile device. Also cool because I can stream my main game PC to any TV, laptop, etc. in the house with low lag. I’m kind of out of touch with home wifi right now. Still on some older AC stuff. Works well enough for phones, browsing etc.
One thing to be aware of when looking at Wi-Fi access points or routers, they usually will list total throughput available as their advertised spec. You cannot get this using a single device connection typically as most devices do not have enough antennae built in. The way modern WiFi works is multiple antennae with multiple connections, to account for several devices utilizing the air at any given time. You’ll have to look for the single device spec probably buried somewhere.
However, 450mbps is astounding speed for gaming. You really are only changing how fast game downloads take when changing this speed at this point. A better metric to look at is latency, which you can reduce by limiting the number of devices connected to your wifi, isolating your system from other systems in the area like neighbors, not using Bluetooth devices in the same band as your WiFi connection, so no Bluetooth 5ghz when you are using WiFi 5 (ac) or 2.4 or 5ghz Bluetooth when using WiFi 6 (ax) or WiFi 6+, making sure your device has good line of sight to your WiFi source (router in this case), not using a VPN, and not doing other things on your network at the same time. But, at some level, latency is going to depend on your ISPs network and your proximity to the gaming service data center you are connected to, which you don’t really have control over.
Think of it like you would latency in a DAW, around 20ms or under will feel natural. More than that and you will be a little behind.
The biggest change you could make, if possible would be this:
Wired is the way for low latency gaming!
Edit: expanded a bit
yeah, wired is ideal but usually only possible if you own the place and don’t mind ripping up your walls. Or you are renting and don’t mind having wires all over the place.
Yeah, I own, but didn’t do everything the absolute correct way.
Mostly though…
Got a GB Wifi6e router for $150. Was one that consistently popped up on people’s list of best routers. I also found out that I could have increased my internet speed by 4x and saved $8 a month. Scum bag Cox Cable failed to mention that when trying to pimp it their Cable TV package to me.
For me, the noticeable ping lag becomes bad when my wife is streaming, my son is streaming, and my security network is running. Played a game the other night, and none of my (s)hits were registering even though the little particle and sound effects were sounding off indicating hits on an opponent. Also I was seemingly getting KIA with one shot, but in actuality the the connection was bogus. I upgraded, and the difference is amazing.
P.S.
I do always do wired to my lappy, but it has to go through the WIFI which had its limits, seeing as it was pretty old.
D/L Baulders Gate 3 now as people seem to be really enjoying it.
Yeah I hate it when people don’t even register their shits despite all the sound effects and little particles.
I’ve watched a good portion of the game on Twitch, BG3 is a masterpiece.
Wasn’t that into it at first, as the turn-based fighting, and point and click style games have never really appealed to me. But…as i dove deeper into, realized the open endedness of it, and installed a mod that allows for 16 party members, I’ve come to realize that it’s now 4 in the morning and I’m in trouble. 100+ hours of gaming inbound.
I’ve been playing too, using GeForce NOW as I don’t have anything strong enough to run it at full 4k otherwise. It’s great so far!
Glad you got your setup going in a good direction!
Wot?
That would be absurd!
Absolutely loving BG3 so far <3
They’ve got it over on Nexus. The mod community has been working 24/7 with modding the game, and it’s kind of exciting to think what they can come up with.
do you know how to access the default router admin web page? Usually I have had to login to mine and configure settings to increase default router throughput performance as the default is not great.
Conan Exiles is tons of fun too!
