Whats your thoughts? Or maybe both?
different animals. what would you be looking to do with either/both of them?
I dont own neither of them. I will purchase the Digitakt2 but im thinking to add the Octatrack to it as well for live Performance/Mixer
DT and OT are very different kinds of things, DT2 has stereo samples and timestretching which were advantages that only OT had before. Otherwise not much has changed in terms of comparison. DT is still better at DT stuff and OT is still better at everything DT doesn’t do. DT is faster to work with, OT is deeper. OT has precise slicing and live sampling and a crossfader. OT has midi arps. DT can sequence midi program changes.
If you have lots of money get both, but learn one at a time.
this. assuming OP has no prior experience with either machine, id say get one or the other but not both at the same time. Even with the DT2 being the more ‘approachable’ of the two, its still pretty deep compared to its predecessor, so there’ll be lots to get stuck into with that alone, without throwing the octatrack into the equation.
Oh God.
But the real question is : what about the sound quality of the OT ?
DT2 Timestretch not really usable as is.
OT is much better for realtime audio processing. DT2 has good playback features, +/- 5 octaves pitch range vs +/- 1 octave for OT.
I’d advise to start witH DT2.
I have both.
Always keep in mind: dt2 will get fixes. It makes sense to compare, but you will need to reevaluate after a few firmwareupdates.
The awaited thread of the month
Both, but a staggered purchase (perhaps by a year, though no less than a few months, and this especially holds if the OT is purchased first).
I don’t really see them as competitors. They don’t really serve the same purposes—the OT is very much a loop machine, though with some work you can approximate individual hit sequencing (e.g. create a chain of individual drum sounds as a single long sample, and then slice sequence them). That’s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of differences.
The Digitakt would be more immediate in terms of getting a unique groove going you can call your own.
Digitakt 2 first, especially if you don’t have prior experience with Elektron’s design ethos. I’ve seen the OT derail the productivity of many musicians over the years, though almost all loved it after they wrapped their heads around a workflow (of which everbody’s is different).
I’ll chime in here with my experience. I bought an OTmk1 about five years ago. I lasted about 4 months with it. It was overwhelming for me to learn so much at once. Sold it and got a DT1 a year later. I fully learned the sequencer in all of its deph. Been using it for a few years now. I got an OTmk2 from marketplace here a few months ago and it was a totally different experience than my first attempt. Although there are many differences in the UI, having experience with DT1 really set me up for success with the OT my second time around. I now have the DT2 and I love it. Honestly, if the DT2 got a live looping function added I would sell my OT. The scenes and fader are fun but I primarily have the OT for synced live looping which is unparalleled right now.

I dunno. None of those are Digitakt II. This looks to be the first one.
From somebody on the outside, it’s probably hard to gauge how relevant a Digi 1 v Octatrack MK2 discussion would be to this current concern.
I see no DT II
and for those who ask I have owned all of the elektron boxes so i’m very familiar with the machines especially OT. The one I haven’t used is DT2
DT2 is similar to D1. More tracks and filters and such. It was no problem to learn after owning OT and DT1. Your question is not very clear. Still no live looping on DT2 so still using OTmk2 in my use case.
For the moment, I’m hesitating between these 2 models. On paper, I should prefer the Octatrack (although I only know the DT’s workflow). But I have the impression that the DT2 has a more promising future, and that if you’re patient enough, it’s a matter of time for Elektron to unlock new features on the DT… maybe when the OT is disconnected for lack of components.
