Hi,
I was experimenting with Digitakt and Overbridge yesterday and realised I could use the “Total Recall” feature to save kits using Overbridge and Instrument Rack.
In fact, you can save entire projects as an Instrument rack preset (rather than an ableton project file.) This means you can easily ‘import’ digitakt projects into any ableton project you want just by importing a preset Instrument Rack!
It’s not “true” kits, as its really just saving the project and all the patterns associated etc, but it allows me to save presets like “hard 909” into Ableton and quickly load the entire “kit” to play about with.
DigitaktDrum.adg (34.8 KB)
I’ve attached the .adg file here. This uses the most basic project setup, IE only factory samples etc. so it should work for everyone.
You can use this as the “init” preset, and then build up from here and click the “Save as New Preset” button on instrument rack as you progress.
The idea here is that all the sequencing occurs in the Digitakt, then when we want to save the project we just save it as a new Instrument Rack preset.
We use Ableton just for mixing / multitrack recording. However you can use it as a regular drum rack if you wish to use it that way and sequence from Ableton!
How to use:
- Open Ableton
- Make sure your Digitakt is switched on and in OB mode.
- Of course, make sure if you already have a project loaded that you save it, as this will overwrite that (as with any total recall digitakt project)
- Drop down the “DigitaktDrum” instrument rack - this is essentially your “init” project.
- On the Digitakt select “Use Plugin State”.
** Notes about the Instrument Rack **
- I have added a ‘Side Chain Pump’ which operates on the FX channel, I’ve left it in here as it’s a common thing people wanna do, but of course you can just remove it if you don’t need it.
- I’ve named the Drumrack tracks based on what I usually use them for, you can of course change the names to suit your own needs.
I hope this helps someone! It’s definitely sped up my workflow, I can now simply drop in an init DigitaktDrum ‘kit’ into any Ableton project and have it all just work
Issues I’ve run into:
- When you drop a Preset into your scene, you might need to open the plugin window and click “Auto Select” on and off a few times. This seemed to be required in order for the Digitakt to present the “Use Plugin State” option.
NOTES:
- I am assuming here that the “total recall” state is something that’s saved to the plugin similar to everything else, if not, you may need to activate Total Recall?
- Does anyone know for sure, does the plugin save EVERYTHING to the plugin instance itself? It seems to, as I can open new Ableton projects and drop my presets in and it works. But I wanna be sure.
- It would be awesome if we could do something like this for Digitone multimap too, but as multimap doesn’t currently work with OB, this is not possible
WARNING:
As with all things Overbridge, only have 1 instance of the plugin per device! I’ve not tried dropping down more than one DigitaktDrum instrument rack into an Ableton scene as I don’t know what will happen and don’t really wanna risk it
