U are looking to buy something you donā€™t believe you can create on your own.
What does buying gear fulfill in you?
Find a way to attain that otherwise.

I owe 6K to Affirm, 2K to Klarna, 2K to Sweetwater, 2K to American musical supply.

I am in debt forever.

Luckily my wife just got a new job so I am budgeting paying it all off in 6 monthsā€¦and pray she keeps the job!

As far as more GAS, nopeā€¦Iā€™m moving on from this hobby. Did it with telescopes and now music gear. I dont make music, just like to play around. Next hobby, travel!!!

iOS apps are cheap and sometimes free

Gear takes a while to master. Gear is like a long Japanese RPG game.

It took me 4 years to use Maschine MK3 with muscle memory.

It took me 4 years to call out what I want in Analog four and shape away.

Iā€™m more satisfied that I didnā€™t give up and kept practicing on those platforms.

Good deals will always be there but think about fear you currently own that you need to master.

I donā€™t think that this is something you overcome with logic; addiction is rarely treated with the cold hard truth. Thereā€™s a point where you acknowledge that you have a problem, and then you basically trick yourself into stopping. Eventually the truth you create becomes your reality.

Self-control isnā€™t something you can find on the internet and because I can relate to your sentiments, I wish you the best of luck and hope everything works out for you, and for you as well @therockfrog

My post is necessarily about music creation. It could be self image, value creation, excitement, etc.

Not to be ā€œthat guyā€, but there are plenty of threads on this forum about dealing with GAS. Read those for tons of tips on how to deal with this issue. Best of luck. Itā€™s a tough one as there is a constant flow of new shiny gear hitting the market.

Find a couple of things you like and do a deep dive on those. Donā€™t buy anything new until you have completely rinsed them out.

Set a strict limit on amounts. If you want something different/new, sell what you have first, then buy the new thing.

Set some goals on productivity. Donā€™t buy anything new until you have made 1-2 albums or EPā€™s. The process of creating those will help you learn the gear you have. Maybe you decide you donā€™t need anything else.

stop looking at gear deals. give your partner a code to a screen time restriction app or other tools necessary to block gear websites. fill the time you normally spend searching for gear doing something else fulfilling. if your job enables you to do the gear searching, maybe find a new job where your constant attention is necessary. this is most likely a symptom of a greater need for gratification in your life, not just being addicted to a good deal.

To clarify - Iā€™m not trying to be dismissive, just want you to know itā€™s a common problem and there are a lot of threads here where you might find good advice.

Maybe list the gear you have currently, your musical goals, influences, plans, etc. and people might be able to help you consolidate and figure out where there might be redundancies and overlap.

Switching to exercising as my main passtime really cured a lot of my GAS. I simply do not have the time or the energy to use all the stuff I already own. :grimacing:

And I unsibscribed all of the synth and synthfluencer channels on YT.

Get a fucking dog.

Then youā€™ll be too skint and pissed off for GAS.

Youā€™re not addicted to gear, youā€™re addicted to shopping and itā€™s facilitated by feedback loops in the modern internet that are really good at separating you from your money. I canā€™t recommend a break from YouTube and elektronauts and Reddit and reverb and resale sites enough - delete the app, block the website, try to reset/break the compulsion to search for new gear. Thereā€™s a million ways to pass time, find one that doesnā€™t involved spending money and consider taking a smart phone break

Remember me? I had that modor dr2 off you. Iā€™ve barely started using it yet because I decided that I needed a Sampler to record all my synthesised drums. So I got a bargain digitakt I. But it had a wobbly volume pot so I returned it. Then I got a sp404 mkii but decided what I really wanted was a digitakt ii.

So I feel your pain. I really hope I get stuck into the modor dr2 now and donā€™t distract myself further.

One option is to stick to 1 in 1 out. So for any new purchase there comes the pain of selling something you already have. Good luck.

We all experience gas, gas come from desire, desire comes from a mental projection of you using the desired object. You can ask yourself where does that projection comes from and what does it mean personally for you.

I certainly know that in my case, being uninspired and bored and frustrated by my job has been a good source of gas.

Try eating a synth. You wont want another i guarantee it.

Iā€™m more than happy with the gear I have, still loads to learn with it tooā€¦ but in the back of my mind there are things I can ā€˜justifyā€™ getting to fill minuscule gaps I think I have. GAS is a battle.
