Hip Hop Battle #38: Aphex Doom & the TR-808s

Honestly I’m just being selfish. I just want to hear a hip hop playlist with Aphex Twin sampled over drums from the Roland TR-808 and MF DOOM rapping on top of all that. I feel like this is a very generic idea (at least on the Elektronaught forum) but also we could make some kick ass tunes!

Here’s the guidelines on this battle:

Share a track from an official release by Aphex Twin (no soundcloud, no other RDJ aliases) You may use the track you shared or someone else’s. Just use at least 2 tracks in your yours.

You are welcome to use any vocals from MF DOOM you’d like.

All other sounds must come from the Roland TR-808. That includes the drums, bass or any other sound. You can use any and all sound mangling processes and effects to make these sounds.

Deadline is Sunday March 30th

Gonna be traveling so can’t participate but looking forward to hearing what people come up with! This sounds like a fun one!

Last year I was on an old school Memphis 808 cowbell kick and @NVVI shared this Murderbells of Mempho mixtape. Maybe some lofi cowbell inspiration in here for someone. :slight_smile:

When you say 808, does it have to come from an actual 808 or can I use an 808 style bass of my own creation?

I would prefer if all sound design outside of sampling songs should be from the standard sounds from the TR-808. So if you want a modern 808 bass sound you have to make it yourself

So drum kit is TR808 only ? Samples and synthesis only ?

Yes but you can do whatever you want to them! make a wavetable out of the cowbell! Feel free to stretch or shrink, distort and saturate all you want!

Was thinking we haven’t had a battle that focuses more on sound design than sample sourcing and chopping.

Also imo the TR-808 is the soul of hip hop, those sounds changed the world. There’s tons of 80s Electro influence in Apex Twin’s music too

Ok I’ll break the ice!

…and to add to this thread, and keep it bumpin, let share our favorite 808 drum beats. Young Malus Mons could not get enough of this song when I was a kid. Everything about this track is my comfort zone. Glad my parents didn’t think it was inappropriate for my ears!

ill have to dive into the aphex discog, as i have never actually listened to any aphex twin, but this challenge is inspiring me so i want to give it a go! ill do some searching for my sample contributions tonight

i reached out to a homie who likes aphex twin for some recommendations and im gonna go ahead and use this as my contribution! also i watched the windowlicker music video for the first time, holy shit that was a ride.

edit: yeesh i whipped up a real stinker, probably gonna make a few before i find one i like

Thats sounds interesting :slight_smile: For the first time i may give it a go :slight_smile: . As im not native English please correct me if i misunderstood the task . We need to use at least 2 Apex Twin tracks , sample them and all the other samples must originate from Tr-808. MF DOOM vocal on top of this . Thanks !
