It over 10 years since Tomorrows Harvest was released. And in that time theres been an explosion of new gear. So they would probably drop some of their older gear.
What would be candidate equipment for them to use?
Probably 95% of what they used then.
They weren’t really using gear of the time back then, no reason they would now, hypothetically.
It’s not rocket science to know what gear you need to make BoC’s music, that’s the less important part of the equation… it’s their creativity and vision that makes it what it is.
BoC on an MC707/Digitakt 2/Deluge (take your pick) would probably still sound a lot like BoC. Go figure.
…my guess would be, since they turned out to be pretty timeless artists in their very own way, they would more focus on some dedicated location, a concept, a working title and just take a reduced selection of the gear they already got and know inside out, take two silicon mpb pros, some old mics, some field recordings and get it started…upfront they would make some calls to invite various guests to join them, for recording heaps of vocals and accoustic instrumentals…
if there’ll ever be a new boards of canada release, the only thing u can count on, it won’t sound like boards of canada as we would expect it…
When Portishead came back with Third after a really long wait they talked about how they swapped instruments between band members which probably made a difference and helped make it the brilliant album it is. Harder with electronics but shifting equipment does help change focus if you’re after it.
Imagine the guys monitoring this thread. Eh, what do we use mate? So much new stuff…wait, what’s that? Never heard of Liven! Looks cool…
Ok, they probably don’t sound like that, but would be an interesting concept to base an album an a random gear forum.
Little of what they’re using is impossible to find, new is not better or necessarily less likely to break, nor are warranties really great for productivity if you need to be without the device for long.
much of it is probably older than that, I’d imagine. if something breaks, they’d probably have it repaired.
anyway, they live in a commune out in the middle of nowhere, right? doesn’t strike me as people very interested in material goods, anxiously awaiting updates from NAMM and Superbooth. I’m sure they pick up stuff here and there as they need it. but likely they mostly just make music with what they’re comfortable with. it’s worked pretty well for them so far.
Yep, most of it I imagine is not unobtanium, they have friends on hand who have skills and can perform maintenance when something goes awry, since they’re probably in regular use not decaying in garages, something will be spotted well before one blown cap can etch a circuit board.
