Introducing Digitone II

probably envelopes but parameter slides would be insane :crossed_fingers:t6: :crossed_fingers:t6: :crossed_fingers:t6:

A question for DN2 owners: if you have a bunch of trigs laid down for an audio track (letā€™s say itā€™s configured to use the FM Drum machine), if you change that track to become a MIDI track (by choosing the ā€œmidi machineā€ for it), does it keep all the same trigs that were already there for that track? Along with p-locks of parameters that are available to both audio and midi tracks (like velocity, note value, and trig conditions) ?

Asking as I can imagine prototyping some ideas with DN2 audio tracks but ultimately wanting the final product to be done with samples or another synth, in which case converting the track from audio to midi and keeping the sequencer data would be very handy

Yes, as on ST and DT2 that also have audio/midi choice.
Parameters your mentioned are part of the pattern, not the preset/sound. Maybe some limitations.

Can be convenient to trigger video too.

Follow up question: does it remember parameter settings for the sound machine if you do this but later revert back to FM drum again?

I just tried, and no, it resets to the init sound.

All 1st TRIG page parameters seems to be maintained, also plocks, LFO.T.

(No FLT.T nor 2nd TRIG page for midi tracks, no retrigs / Portamento)

Thanks for checking. Thatā€™s good news. Now that DN2 is such a balanced groovebox (apart from missing sample playback), I like the idea of sketching whole tracks on it and replacing some parts with samples or other synthsā€™ voices by swapping the audio tracks into MIDI. Youā€™d lose the timbral p-locks and have to re-implement with midi CC p-locks, but at least the fundamental rhythm, pitch, velocity data is preserved. I could imagine myself starting every track with DN2, and being more likely to finish as well, at least once Overbridge is implemented

Has no one talked about the ā€œSave P-LOCK as PRESETā€ function??? Iā€™ve been waiting for this!

Iā€™m also hoping for that one. It seems to be the most powerful groovebox/sketch pad Iā€™ve owned so far. I want to see how far I can push things on DN II and whether I gravitate towards doing what you describe or just finish tracks with only DN.

Iā€™ve imported my DN projects today and am really impressed how good they sound. I donā€™t know if it does actually sound better in some way or if itā€™s just because itā€™s new and shiny, but like with DT II, everything somehow sounds even richer and fuller. And I can finally just add some drums to the many crippled DN sketches where I wished it had more tracks.

Curious as to what peopleā€™s processes are for using a new device for the first time?

Go in blind? pre-read the manual? watch videos?

What is the first thing you do on the device?
How do you explore from there?

(DNII coming in tomorrowā€¦getting impatient today)

I absolutely read the manual before every purchase. I will have watched demo videos but I try to put those aside when the device arrives, unless there are specific sounds I want to immediately attempt. I play through the factory patterns and presets if the device has them; if not, I start with the most basic sound and try each control in turn, and then maybe combos. I am quite likely to get carried away and start doing complex things, only to hit a wall and have to reset back to init. I donā€™t try to be productive, mostly ever, but definitely not in the first few weeks with a device.

If this is your first Elektron device, the manual may take some getting used to, and you will need to read it through several times, and refer to it often during use. If you already have one or more Elektron boxes, there will be a lot that is familiar, and you need to focus on what is new and different.

Cool.
I havenā€™t really exposed myself to anything other than the basic specs and the DNII clips/jams/songs/tracks posted hereā€¦which all have sounded amazing.

I had a DNI for a month until I decided to sell to fund the DNII.
Have had a Syntakt since July.
I am newish to grooveboxes/synthsā€¦so it has been an uphill battle finding a piece of gear that clicked with me like the Syntakt. Honestly, I almost gave up.
So I figure the DNII should be really fun.

How is everyone getting on with their DNII after a little over a month since release?

Love mine. Amazing machine

With that prior experience, you should slide into DN2 just fine, no matter how you choose to approach it. I think youā€™ll find that many of Syntaktā€™s advantages carry over, relative to DN1. Iā€™m having trouble finding time to work with it right now, but what I have managed to do has been quite exciting.
