does it require the fully licensed VCV? the HOST FX is not available for free, right?

What you could do is use the free version of VCV and only buy the host fx module.
It’s nice to use 4 of those and send to the 4 tracks of the Digitone, then tweak Digitone while a nice sequence is going.
Next I will invite Digitakt to VCV too.
