Korg ST1K Synthesizer Tuner

A new synthesizer-focused tuner from Korg aimed at analog and modular players.

  • Optimized circuitry for stable tuning of analog and modular synths.
  • 3D visual meter with superior visibility and aesthetics.
  • Ultra-precise tuning down to ±0.1 cents.
  • Three meter display modes in addition to note name display.
  • Compact, flat design that is easy to carry anywhere.

$49.99 in the US! Not bad! Guitar strobe tuners really aren’t made for synthesizers, so while a little innocuous at a glance, it’s actually a pretty cool offering from Korg!

Interestingly, B&H in the US shows it in stock but is charging $20 more than other retailers?!

I’ve been using this bad boy for like 20 years. could prolly use an update:

Yeah, 2xAAA batteries will do you for 50 hours (allegedly).

Pretty weird, I wonder if it’s a mistake. B&H is usually coming in under MSRP if anything, I’ve got some good deals from them.

I’ve been needing a synyh focused tuner for years now. So many times I get nothing out of physical and vst tuners. Surprised this hasn’t been done sooner. Hopefully it also picks up my snares so I can make them less shit.

Depending on how well it works, this could unironically be Korg’s best release in the past two years.

I think it was a smart move by Korg, I mean how can it not sell? The only thing that could possibly happen is that their super tuner isn’t actually accurate, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt on utilitarian hardware like this.

People also seem to be pretty happy with the functionality of that nts-2 oscilloscope, and this one you don’t have to assemble yourself.

No brainier, for me at least. I’ve been using the cheapest Boss one for ages so I’m due an upgrade

Easy buy for a lot of people (not myself currently) and as a guitar player, I always liked Korg tuners (maybe just a familiarity thing). Price is right on it. Smart business

I’m more of a “wait for someone I’m acquainted with to tell the truth about it” than I am an “instabuy” kind of shopper, but I know what you mean. It’s probably gonna be on my short list.

My 25+ year old tuners are pretty tired at this point, one of them I can’t even find the battery door. It’s just a sad state of affairs.

Modular synths are supposed to be tuned? Seems like a major miscalculation on Korg’s part. What do they think we’re doing, making music!?

Truly the greatest of all tuners. Synths or not.

So I received an ST1K (ordered from Detroit Modular):

  • Fast and easy to use
  • Large, bright, very readable display
  • Input and output if I want to keep in the signal path

Just what I hoped for. This will have a permanent place next to my modular setup.

This is what I’ve been waiting to hear. How is the build quality? Just standard injection mold plastic fare?

Your opinion of course, I realize everyone has different definitions for this.

Yes, injection molded plastic, but seems to be of decent quality. Device as a whole feels solid and well put together; no worrying flex. No wobble on 1/4" input and output connectors.

That said, if I was going to throw it in a bag I’d want to put it in something padded. Also, with injection molded plastic, sliding battery doors always worry me. But that’s par for the course with this type of small, plastic gadget.

right? those battery door alignment pins are usually like match heads if you aren’t careful. anyways, that’s kinda what I thought but very helpful, thanks man.

I‘m super interested in that tuner. Not sure what modules you use but did you maybe try it on more comples sample/ganular based sounds or maybe some noisier sounds? In my experience, many tuners choke when things get noisy, so hoping the new Korg one might work better.

White noise is naturally going to work against any tuner…That’s just physics!

But just playing around with various mixes of PWM and triangle waves on my MSW 810-M the ST1K seems to do fine. Next time I’m playing with a wavefolder or a complex oscillator I’ll try and remember to do some further testing…
