I ended up impulsively ordering one of these after watching these Sonicstate videos the other day. It’s actually sitting in my car right now, patiently waiting for me to try it out as I count the minutes until the work day is over. I’ll report back with my thoughts after I’ve had a chance to get to know it.
What a wonderful thing to greet you after work.
Certainly would like to now how the sequencer compares to the newer Elektrons. I know that they seem to do a lot of what p. locks do, though maybe not to the same comprehensiveness. And can you chain a bunch of sequences?
Wow very nice! I just sold my Waldorf microwave’s to focus on other things, but if i want a hybrid synth back it’s gonna be one of the Modal’s!
What would happen if Modal brings out a drum machine?
These guys would kick ass and i would sell my Elektron machine’s for that! Really high end synths with a much better future perspective than Elektrons waste of time bridge!
Yeah, I’m thinking of selling my Rytm, Virus TI and Minitaur for this. That would leave me the Octatrack and Modal.
I think it would be tasty to run the Octatrack through the transistor ladder filter and re-sample.
If they make a 2 voice version of the 008 it’s goodbye for my Analog Four
I’m trying to get a picture of the sound from all the demos. I like the creamy, PPG like sound it has, maybe even a little dubby like.
But I am wondering whether I would prefer the DSI Pro 2
I really like this synth. To me, its highlights are its great filter with slope control, beautiful crisp oscillators, and incredible build quality. Its sound reminds me of a virus going through an Oberheim SEM filter. It just sounds so good; it can be creamy or out of control.
There aren’t extensive modulation routing capabilities. If you modulate multiple parameters with either LFO, they have to share the same depth for each LFO. One thing I’d really like to see in the future ,if possible, is the ability to use an oscillator as a modulation source; it’d be so much fun using all the 50+ waves available. Another thing I’d really like to see is some sort of interpolation between waveforms when changing them. You can modulate the waveform, but it produces a choppy effect I don’t find desirable. If interpolation between waveforms ever gets implemented, it would elevate this synth to another level. I know that they are working on slew for the animator, which pleases me greatly because I don’t find the steppy effect it creates desirable. I think when slew is implemented, it will definitely be a game changer for me.
I also own a DSI PRO 2; I actually had them both on at the same time so I could compare them side-by-side. I’m so glad I don’t have to choose between the two. These are my two favorite synths ever; I love digital oscillators paired with analog filters. I already know that the Modal 001 will become my main source for bass. I love the types of bass I can get from this synth; they are so punchy. I love my PRO 2 so much as well though. It is such a joy to program, and the modulation capabilities are mind-blowing. I love using oscillators as modulation sources, and the sequencer is so straight forward. It’s so easy to record parameter changes into the sequencer for almost any parameter. I was concerned that the Modal 001’s rather limited modulation capabilities (in contrast to the PRO2) would be an issue. But it’s surprising how quickly things sound good on the Modal 001 with just some simple layering of two different waves. Besides that, it’s pretty fun trying out oscillator sync with all the different waves; they all sound different from one another. And the filter is really special. When the drive is turned up, it just sounds so good; I can’t put it into words. Modulating cutoff and slope at the same time sounds really cool.
I’m going to go play with it some more now. No comment about the sequencer; haven’t had a chance to do anything with it yet. Both the animator and sequencer only show 8 steps at a time on the screen FYI. We’ll see how I adjust to this. I do wish there was way to program TB303-like slides, accents, and such, which I don’t see a way of doing as of right now.
I don’t understand why you guys are comparing these to the Elektrons. It totally seems like apples and oranges to me.
I don’t trust or believe in Elektron anymore… I really like the whole philosophy of Modal and that’s what i call high end synths with a tactile user interface.
Thanks Prints, some good info there!
I think the extra modulation options sound attractive on the Pro 2 but I’m thinking I may enjoy the sound of the Modal more. I also own a Virus TI and suspect I might welcome a less complex synth in some ways.
I plan on pairing it with an Octatrack for drums and samples.
Have you tried running any other audio through the external ins?
