Model Cycles to trigger Digitakt 2

Simple as that, folks, I can get the Digitakt’s BPM and play in sync but no triggers yet, would love it if this was possible as a way of ‘transferring’ compositions from M:C onto samples loaded into Digitakt.

I’ve done as much fiddlign on both machines’ MIDI settings as possible, really can’t find my answer anywhere.

Hello, it’s a midi device so the convention of triggers may not be quite the correct understanding of the issue, but it sounds like you want to be able to record patterns from M:C to DT2.

I don’t believe that the M:C patterns are currently producing any midi note data, they would therefore need to be configured as midi tracks in order to do that. I don’t have M:C so I can’t tell you what happens when you try to switch from one to the other, or even if your sequencer trigs are retained if you switch it from an audio to a midi track, so just make sure that you save your progress before you try anything.

Playing a midi track with trigs programmed into the M:C sequencer could be live recorded into the digitakt. In order to accomplish this, you would need to manually engage the play/record on the digitakt and manually engage sequencer start/playback on the M:C.

With the clock synced by midi and Digitakt with 100% quantize engaged, you should be able to make this work for you. If it is difficult for you to catch the first note on the initial DT recording start, then instead try waiting for the pattern to wrap around and hitting play on the M:C just as that happens (when the loop goes from the last step back to the first step, while the sequencer is recording).

Elektron sequencers overdub any notes that come after the pattern cycles back to the beginning and digitakt tracks are monophonic so there should be no issue of double notes occurring.

If you want the same sounds from the M:C you would have to sample them and use them as your track sounds on DT or if you have some other samples you’d like to use instead, you’ll be left with just the sequencer data and no sounds attached (unless you’ve already assigned a track sound).

Remember, this is a midi note performance being recorded to a DT2 audio track, so do not attempt to record the midi notes to a midi track on the digitakt. Think of it as the M:C is now acting as an external midi controller and it’s only function at the moment is to enter midi notes into the digitakt’s sequencer.

For what it’s worth, you could trigger track sounds on digitakt by using the M:C as the master sequencer and only using the digitakt as a sound module, so the same midi notes would play the track sound as opposed to what we want to do which is transferring notes by recording them across machines. That’s why I say the concept of triggers as used by Roland and CV/Gate machines doesn’t work for your needs.

Hopefully the user manual can help fill in the blanks, but this is what you want to do. Good luck.

Also remember, each device in their own respective menu will need to be configured: M:C to send notes, and digitakt to receive notes. Otherwise, when you play the M:C sequence digitakt won’t listen for the note data.

Func + Track to enter track menu, check the MIDI OUT option to activate the track as both internal AND to send MIDI to the other device.

Woah, this is amazing, thanks so much for the detailed ideas! I’ve made some progress. Might be a bug but data is getting recorded into the Digitakt (but on MIDI tracks), it seems only parameter data is picked up, but it doesn’t correspond with what’s happening on the M:C. I seem to recall it being possible to do as mentioned above (as @shigginpit mentioned, great username by the way!) but I might be misremembering… For comparison I tried on my old Digitakt (version 1) and no luck at all, even with recording ‘false parameters’ so to speak. I feel it’s within reach, but having fiddled already so much with MIDI settings on both devices I’m needing maybe some time to just ponder over it otherwise it’s getting frustrating.
