The Behringer Neutron comes close with a patchable LFO, two attenuators, two utility mixers (Sum 1 and Sum 2), inverter, sample and hold, noise, and slew rate limiter. It also has a multiple but only has two multiple outs as opposed to the CP-251’s three multiple outs.
Thank you so much! That is a very clever answer. I do not think it would have occurred to me to at a desktop modular synth. I will add it to the list, especially since a case, power source, and modules can get expensive very quickly.
I have a Moog CP-251 and a Neutron and got a second Neutron for its extra utilities and additional paraphony. I noticed the similarities between the functionality of its patch bay and the CP-251.
Well, then thank you for taking the time to respond. Was a shot in the dark and it worked.
Bit ironic that the CP-251 is no longer available given how popular modular is now. I know it used 1/4" (if I recall correctly, it’s been a long time since I had mine!), but it is hard to believe they haven’t reissued it with Eurorack standard connections.
Yes it uses 1/4" cables. A Eurorack version of the CP-251 is a nice idea. It’s not easy to find a reasonable price for a used CP-251 these days. It’s a shame Moog discontinued the Moogerfooger line. The Moogerfoogers are my favorite effects pedals along with Chase Bliss pedals.
A few weeks ago I was contemplating on swapping my Moogerfoogers for eurorack modules, but after I played with them for a few minutes I took that back and flushed that idea without blinking.
Was looking for a CP-251 last year, came back from that trip really fast.
It’s mostly basic utilities. “dual waveform LFO, Noise Generator, Sample-and-Hold circuit, as well as two attenuators, a lag processor, a CV mixer and a 4-way mult.“
A MATHs would give you 2 channels that each could be LFOs (Capable of more than 2 waveforms) or lag processors as well as a CV mixer in the center. There are many modules available that provide noise and sample + hold. Attenuators and mults are also readily available. If you are using stackable cables, you don’t need mults.
True, and I loved my Maths when I had a Eurorack system, but the CP-251 was a standalone unit. Even a small 4ms pod and power brick alone would cost over $100. I would love to find a desktop solution that doesn’t require sourcing the parts individually.
But it is possible that if i found some of that stuff secondhand it could be cheaper… thanks for the replies, everyone!
After swearing off hardware I kind of fell into a Minilogue XD module via a Korg NTS-1 that was the gateway.
The XD has two CV inputs that would be fun to (ab)use. A small, tactile hardware modulator would be more fun than just using MIDI, I think, so I was curious about what was out there. Long ago I used a CP-251 with a Lil Phatty and it was great fun.
Eurorack is always an option but the case and power supply entry fees always bum me out. Would rather have a self-contained unit. The 0-Ctrl looked amazing until I found out there is no built-in quantizer. UGH.
