I bought this based on your recommendation but i’ve realised that the Little Bear passive stereo mixer has 4 channel 3.5mm stereo inputs. The Moog 3 tier sound studio has 3 x 1/4 inch mono outputs. Aside from having to use adapters to connect this all up I wonder does anyone know if the mono to stereo conversion will interfere with the sound quality? Anyone recommend a good 1/4 inch mono to single stereo out summing mixer? Thanks.
I use a soundcraft EPM 8 and have used it for 8 years. There is a 6 channel format too, as well as a 12. As far as quality you will not find a better mixer and the price is unbelievable for what you’re getting. Allen and Heath make 4 and 6 channel compact mixers too but they are not as capable. Among the rest of small format mixers is mostly varying degrees of junk.
1/4" mono is the rule among mixers designed for music production. Outputs are two chanel stereo, and usually there are multiple output options.
There typically isn’t a “single stereo out” other than the headphone, which any mixer will have. Mixers usually have a right and left main out ( XLR), and will have monitor outs (1/4, left and right) as well as a “rec out” (RCA connector, left and right). A legitimate mixer will also have “aux sends” which allow you to send different mixes of your instruments. Aux sends are typically used to bring effects like reverb into the mix, allowing you to control how much reverb on each channel. And they are useful in electronic music as they allow you to send any one, or multiple channel to be sampled or looped in a live setting.
There is a lot to learn about mixers but fortunately it’s all logical so once you grasp the basic concept it is just a simple thing with many parts.
Cool, thanks for the tip. I checked them out. I was hoping for something smaller to hide behind the sound studio unit…however on reflection maybe i should just bite the bullet and get a proper mixer…Cheers ; )
It will increase your ability and over all equal better sound. Though you can’t go “cheap” with mixers, another reason the soundcraft EPM series is special.
And if you can’t put it behind, put it under the whole show. I’ll eventually build a shelf for under the table, which will return all the left room…
This man is pure talent.
But the digitakt is the real star surely.
yes, but the sound of the mothers is pure beauty
Quick, someone tell him about Song Mode
Seriously, learned a few things watching his techniques for moving around a set AND I’ve been absolutely loving sequencing hardware with Digitakt using song mode—freeing up hands to tweak the Mother and DFAM knobs through mute transitions has been wonderful.
Quick question about sequencing DFAM with Digitakt.
I had what I’d hoped would be a foolproof idea for sending DFAM a clock but bypassing Mother’s sequencer:
- Set Mother Assign Out to CC 2 (kinda pick that one at random, it corresponds with BC)
- Set a Digitakt MIDI channel to send a square wave LFO, at 64x 16 (or 32), and trigger the LFO at step 1. Experimenting put me at a LFO depth of about 32, with BC set to 64.
- Mother 32 Assign Out to DFAM Adv/Clock In.
It works at first blush but I’ve run into some issues:
sometimes it plays or triggers sequencer steps twice (even setting all other Pitch and Vel knobs to zero), usually fixed by turning down the DT LFO depth / value, but it
And sometimes if the signal is too weak it stops.
I’d thought the name of the game would just be getting at least 3v to trigger the gate, but it’s a lot more finicky than anticipated.
I tried a couple other LFO waves (saw and ramp) but seem unable to find the sweet spot if there is one. I can go back to other MIDI to CV solutions, but wish this could work.
Has anyone had success with a similar setup?
Yes. Id prob drop the subharmonicon and have this set up as well.
I obtained a DFAM in a trade a few months ago and recently paired it with my Subharmonicon.
In this video both synth’s audio signals are being processed separately- the SH is running through a Thermae and the DFAM is being processed by a thru machine on my Octatrack.
I love how limited and focused these two are as a pair. They have such a fun workflow.
