Looks like a yes. Just waiting for the new MPC “Premium” subscription service now.
is this firmware update free or nah?
The update‘s free. The new plugins aren‘t.
can’t find it. is there a change log? wanna know if I should continue to bother looking for it.
in auto update mode, my Live says its up to date at 2.11.5
I haven‘t checked on the MPC, but there‘s a 2.11.6 download for USB on akaipro.com
ya I looked there…thats why im asking. I try my best to research before I ask [most of the time. sometimes im lazy]
possible its not available North America yet? that link you gave doesnt have it. just 2.11.5
maybe im just super dumb
Uh oh, this isn’t great news to be honest. I feel like the MPC is turning into its own walled garden hardware DAW ecosystem where you’ll have to pay a bunch for things you could achieve for free on any other DAW.
I hate to say it but this makes me love my MPC less. I’m not interested in investing more into it than I already have, but now it’s getting clear that if I don’t, I’ll have a subpar experience. I’m sure by the time they release a really good reverb, it’ll also be a premium addition.
I dont like that you have to have that content on your box even if you dont wanna buy.
I dont use any of those pay synths…dont care to. yet they are in there cluttering up my UI. I would even welcome the ability to just hide stuff you dont want to see.
it also reminds me of how poor I am
iOS apps are a walled garden too? Like Android apps… I had to pay for abelton instruments if i had not bought their premium bundle.
Sw development is expensive, its a lot of work which only experts can perform. I think its fair that they want an income developing the plattform. I think the asking price is high, but the nieche is smaller than DAW software companies have.
This “premium” turn of Akai would not happen if MPC had display like Roland products .
well for a decent reverb and delay i would pay
but what if i sell the MPC? is there any way to remove the licence? I didn’t buy anything from them at the moment and a probably won’t because i have hardware-synths
Just keep doing what you’re doing with what you got.
If the new FX truly interests you, but not at that price, I’m sure they’ll go on sale like the other paid FX
I concur you haven’t heard of the Roland Cloud? They sell sound packs at like 5$ a pop and yearly subscriptions to soft synths…
Personally I bought the MPC for what it could do at that time. I don’t feel I need any of those plugins, but I could be tempted by the OPx4 when it gets on sale, more power to them. I see it pretty much the same as selling expansion packs, and I don’t remember people crying about those.
I just hope that some of that new revenue stream gets reinvested in the core platform though.
Yep and daws sell plugins too. Ableton Live suite, FL etc so this isn’t new.
I think the way the mpc is now is enough, but i dont mind them selling plugins to ensure they have money to further develop the platform
Maybe if they keep adding stuff like this, there will be a market for an MPC ‘Lite’ at some point
Hi. My point is that with big display they could start to promote premium content more aggresively directly in the device - you couldnt do this in TR-8S for example .
Anyway I also wait for a sale to buy OPX-4.
Yep and I avoid them too. I prefer to pay once, I don’t know why but those things just bug me. Like, I paid for Reason 10 but I haven’t paid for a single Rack Extension and wouldn’t really consider it either. I do use some free RE’s though. I also use Valhalla’s SuperMassive. If I paid for plug-ins, it would have to be VSTs that I know I’d still own if I ever switched DAW in the future. This is why these MPC plugins are showstoppers for me.
Oh yeah, I don’t blame them and from a business standpoint I totally get it. It just makes me less attracted to the MPC, even if I don’t even need these plugins. I don’t know why but this is just how I feel about it. The MPC suddenly feels less like a creative instrument and more like a limited computer in a (albeit wonderful) midi controller and audio interface.
The good news here is that Akai is fully committed to this ecosystem and platform. This means that we will most likely see it improve over time, with more bug fixes and new hardware generations that don’t break backward compatibility. I predict that they will bump up the ram on the next gen MPCs and possibly also the CPU so they can run more stuff simultaneously. Wouldn’t be surprised if the next gen would allow more insert effects etc etc. Slowly but steadily the MPC will become the “fully integrated DAW” that blends a hardware and software experience. That’s still a very attractive future if they continue to work on workflow improvements, quality of life fixes and a new generation of hardware buttons with even more direct hands-on control.
Define “subpar”…
Cheers!
I think it’s super, misspelled.
Finally…
A reason to embrace the fact that Roland is still building gear with alarm-clock parts from the '70s. Haha…
Cheers!
