We already had the Zoom F8 with 8 tracks and now it’s the F4 with 4 tracks. Perfect for field record to get your own samples for the Octatrack.
So, it’s like the h6 but more durable and easier to use discretely.
Also, it’s expandable to 6 tracks.
Zoom are so cool
The Zoom H6 works perfectly for me.
Yeah, I can’t really tell the major differences between the two units other than this being designed for stowing away while recording, and the h6 being designed for handheld.
@NoiseLab, thoughts?
Any price published?
Not from what I’ve seen
Ive been using a Zoom UAC-8 as my main audio interface for the past few months, after selling my Focusrite saffire pro because I wanted to move away from firewire and get something that uses USB3. Gotta say I was actually pretty impressed - I thought it would just be a run of the mill, average sounding interface, but actually you can drive the inputs pretty hard and it saturates really nice instead of just going into nasty distortion. Honestly it ends up sounding better than the focusrite - that may have something to do with the upsampling, though
The UAC-8 uses high-end components such as the AKM AK5388 analog-to-digital converter and AKM AK4413 digital-to-analog converter. In addition, the UAC-8 performs 4-times upsampling during both analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion. In other words, when the sampling frequency is set to 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, the UAC-8 processes the signal at high resolution 176.4 kHz or 192 kHz.
The Zoom F4 & F8 are on a higher segment in quality than the H6 handheld recorder.
The F4 & F8 are within reach for a lower budget compared to Sound Devices, Zaxcom, Nagra & Aaton mullitrack field recorders.
Here a review of the F8 compared with the Sound Devices 744T:

Thanks! I was in between the H6 or the F4. However, the form factor of the F4 looks more alluring anyway.
I’d wager this one is going to be about $700
I also have the Zoom H5 (same specs as H6) and i use the Sound Devices USBPre 2 (same specs as 788T) audio interface. Ive tested the H5 and USBPre 2 with a Rode NT4 stereo mic and did some recording sessions on the beach in the early morning when there are quiet waves, the difference was big, especially at low levels.
However i am interested in the Zoom F8 because i am going to use more mics in the future.
one MASSIVE difference - timecode in/out. … that’s what really separates it from the H6… and makes it very desirable for film/video based work
This is the best UAC-8 review I have read on the internet. Thanks a million, I am going to buy one of these.
When do you need multiple mics if you record something for OT?
I don’t have a OT But even when i have it’s still a fact for me. I like to use different kind of mics like contact mics, hydrophone mics, parabolic mics and devices to record electromagnetic fields. Or different mic techniques and design them to get it ready for the OT.
