So here is the thing, I’m a proud OT mkII owner aswell as a N.I. Z2 mixer owner. The Z2 basically is both analog and digital mixer with Traktor integrated so you can use either regular vinyls or DVS.
In my case, I want to scratch the sounds coming from my OT using my DVS and even resample/loop/mangle them back in the OT whenever I feel the need to and even re-scratch them back and so on and on.
I’ve read, re-read, re-re-read both effin’ manuals but can’t get my head around this so far. Do I need like an external module between my OT and my mixer in order to achieve this?
The thing is I want my set up to be as portable as possible, so Eurorack is a “no go” for me unless it’s quite cheap, small and built like a tank.
If I have to go modular, then I would like my Innofader (the top notch crossfader in my mixer) to eventually send cv/gate messages while opening the crossfader, adjusted to the crossfader curve (if that make sense… I feel like I lost most of you non scratchers here ). Therefore I will probably have to build a custom crossfader box, but I suck big times in electronics, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I think it is totally do-able, here’s an example of what I want to achieve but with my OT, not a modular rack:
The Syntablism approach is to scratch a synthesizer but the OT is a sampler. And scratching samples is basically what you do with Traktor so I don’t see how that could work. The only option would be to control some parameters via MIDI since the Z2 also sends MIDI messages but it‘s far from ideal. If you want to send CV/Gate info you will need something to translate it if you don’t want to involve a computer and with Eurorack you have the most options. I’m using the Convertor+ from Sonicsmith which is a little desktop box and it works pretty good.
If you want to understand the concept of Syntablism check the videos from SirCut, he developed the concept. Kris Gjerstad uses a different approach by using a control tone from Traktor to send CV/Gate info but the concept is designed to scratch a synthsizer, either completely modular or semi modular as long as they have CV and Gate inputs. Behringer Model D works for example or the Neutron which I both used to have and used for exactly that. I tried the Traktor method from Kris at the beginning but the tracking with the Convertor box works best for me since I also don‘t want to go the Eurorack route.
I guess you could bounce some loops and one shots from your octa and put them into traktor then set up cue points. Trigger them, cut and scratch over the octatrack when playing the same sounds. From what I remember traktor can be clocked to hardware? Then you can also the traktor fx whilst cutting
Does traktor have a sample deck? Been years since I’ve used it but if it did you could route the octa in, sample, loop and scratch parts played on the octa
The thing is I want to do it live, so bouncing loops is not really where I want to go. Basically: OT sound to my mixer and manipulate the sound using the DVS in real time, while it’s recorded in OT’s buffers so once I finished scratching a sequence I can use OT parameters to distort/mangle them and go back and forth at will.
You can assign any sound coming from the remix decks to the dvs using the Z2 mixer. Or I didn’t understand what you’re saying, but I’m sick these days (bad flu), so pardon me if I got it wrong.
I’m familiar with the concept and binge watched pretty much everything I could from SirCut & Kypski. It’s great you posted these examples though, for those who are less familiar or those who want to help in this topic.
If I really have to, I’ll go modular, but I don’t want to go that way because me being me, my bank account will cry rivers . I’ll check the module you mentionned and see if I can go somewhere from there. I also own a microbrute (OG) which is semi modular and would be nice if I could scratch the sounds coming from it too, but ideally the microbrute would be already a “pick up machine” assigned to the OT.
Yeah I know this vid (it sold the OT too me). I can do that. He’s using real vinyls, live looping them in the OT and mangling them with the OT parameters. What I want to do: the sound source is the OT>>> goes to Z2 mixer>>> assign the sound coming from the OT to a DVS>>> scratch it like craaaaaazy>>> record the result back in the OT’s buffers>>> manipulate the scratched sounds with the OT>>> repeat.
Basically what you need is the audio from octa to be manipulated by the dvs so the dvs signal tone would need converted to a play head that let’s you scrub back and forth on live audio. That audio is then fed back into octa to effect.
I think that’s it
I’m not sure if it exists but it’s something I’d love to have
